Although it is believed that a more important post would have been assigned him if he had expressed his disappointment, Bishop Chatard chose instead to come to the western United States and further the growth of this diocese. The seat of diocese was first in Vincennes and afterward, Indianapolis.

Small Church Became Chapel

At first the chapel was the church of the parish. When the cathedial was built in 1907, ‘he small church became the chapel. In 1918, Miss Therese” O'Connor gave the funds for the redecoration of the chapel. Then it’ acquired the name, Blessed Sacrament chapel, and its treasures began to be installed. Only the entrance of the chapel is seen from the street. It is at the end of a walk between the rectory and the cathedral. The chapel is Romanesque in design, will seat about 200 and has become popular as the scene of weddings in recent years. Seven circular stained glass windows depicting Biblical scenes suggesting the sacrament and mural paintings of the nine choirs of angels adorn the walls. Other treasures are statues of St. Roch and the Little Flower, and mosaics.
