Great Lakes Fleet Has a Big Job Ahead of It This Summer

1 By ROGER BUDROW

FIVE BOATS ARE OUT BREAKING THE ICE on the Great Lakes, trying to open up the busiest water highway in the world. It’s more important than ever this year that the ore, wheat and coal boats get started sooner than usual. About half of the Great Lakes cargo is iron ore. _ cause steel mills are operating at near capacity and because it- is difficult to get scrap steel, the ore is wanted as soon With the breaks, the ore boats expect to]

; as possible now. beat last year’s record of 80

This ore comes from the big open-pit ranges near Lake Superior and is shipped to the Gary steel district on Lake Michigan and Cleveland, Ashtabula and Conneaut on Lake Erie. The Soo locks, connecting Lake. Superior and Lake Huron, handled 111 million tons of cargo last year, more than the tonnage through the five other largest canals in Roger Budrow (ho world, Suez Panama, Welland, New York State barge and Manchester canal, There are about 750 ships plying the Great Lakes, 480 of which are -U. S.-owned, the remainder Canadian. Although there aren’t any submarines, the dangers are great because of storms. Last summer 13 ships with 235 on board went down in one night during a fierce storm. The wheat boats load up at Duluth and Ft. William on Lake Superior, for ‘the most part. More wheat is shipped in to Buffalo than any other port. (It costs 3% cents a bushel to ship wheat from Duluth to Buffalo.) If the breakers can open a path through the ice (which is two feet thick in some places) the first ore ‘boat will start out around next Thursday. ; » ” 2 INDIANAPOLIS WOMEN will get a chance to be trained for. war work if a plan of the city’s school system is given the green light by the government. The reported plan is to train women as parts inspectors and later on two high schools may give them machine shop training. War factories here are expecting to hire women more and more to replace draftees. Many women , are anxious to do war factory work. But school officials are reluctant to say anything publicly * until the plan is o. kd, fearing : they will be swamped before they are ready. ; s 8 = . INDIANA BANKERS are slowest in the nation in getting| ‘qualified to sell defense bonds. This|S

admonition is made, not by any out-|¢ sider, but by the Indiana Bankers | Med

association itself. Out of the 506 banks in this state,

there were 68 at the first of Febru-|;..q4

ary that still weren't qualified to

jum sell bonds directly to buyers, but|cCanne

had to buy them from some other qualified bank. In 16 states, all banks have qualifled. The national average is 96 per cen’, of all banks. Only 87 per . cent of Indiana hanks have qualified, which puts this state at the bottom of the 48.
