Senator McKellar has asked the ‘office of government reports for a detailed report on" these expenditures. Yesterday the Congressional Record carried an earlier report prepared by the office of government reports showing that in the fiscal year ending last June $147,896,385 was spent by government departments and agencies for travel. Of this more than half, $76,181,597, was for military purposes. The effect of the increasing flow of mail from constituents aroused over unnecessary spending by nondefense agencies was seen in the Hvely interest taken by the senate ia Mr. McKellar’s disclosures, by interrogations as to detailed items, and by frequent admonitions that wasteful spending must stop in this time of emergency.
Also Blames Congress
The senator. confessed that congress was to blame in the first instance for appropriating more money than was necessary. Others chimed in- that downtown officials also were responsible for, spending it. “I am going to appeal with all the earnestness of which I am capable, for heaven's sake, let. us reduce the travel-pay Sllowanges and her Wasgetul. matters,” senator sald,
‘He got ironical as he ‘read some of the items, including $756,445 for the bureau of animal industry of the agriculture department. “They must have found more animals ort the trains than they found on. the Saims,” § he said.
