State Seeks $1796 for Job insurance on Sum Due

Contractor.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., March 19 (U. P.).—The state of Indiana to-

day sought an injunction against Indiana university’s board of trus-| tees to halt payment of $18,000 to contractors as balance due for the|' _ construction of the university’s $500,000 business administration building. In a suit filed by Attorney General George N. Beamer in Monroe circuit court yesterday, the state claimed judgment of $1796 against Abraham Sugarman, Chicago contractor, and the Standard Accident Insurance Co. of Detroit, performance contractor, charging that tax returns filed by Mr. Sugarman under the state unemployment compensation law had not been paid.

The returns were filed during construction of the building from . Jan. 1, 1939, to Jan. 29, 1940, the suit stated. Mr. Sugarman, original contractor, entered into a performance contract with the insurance company, which agreed to pay all claims if he defaulted. When he

The fatherland is quite different from the dreamland they had pictured in their long nights on the battlefields, says Die Weltwoche. They constantly ask what reward awaits them for their sufferings. “No hurrahs or flowers and gifts welcome them. They walk insecurely, like sailors after a long voyage. They speak either too loud They are nervous, ex-

cited, jumpy.” Many Disappointments

There are unexpected disappointments. Beer is not served in the restaurants before 5 p. m, any more. New customers have replaced soldiers at the shops, where servicemen are now treated like “ine truders.” When a soldier wants to take his sweetheart to the movies, he finds the former privilege of low admissions to men in uniform no longer exists. These are minor disappointments, says Die Weltwoche, but they are apt to destroy the vision of the fatherland the soldiers built up duriiig their months at the front. Soldiers on leave are keen, the article asserts, to forget the nightmarish battles. They hate questions.

They're More Skeptical

Their words contain no patriotic tirades or insults against the enemy. “Why do we make each other's life so hard?” is.the question of every soldier back from the fron. “The 1942 soldier is skeptical about the real reasons for this war,” the paper says. “He has heard of too many victories, none of which was the final one.” The distinct revival of religious feeling among the soldiers returning from Russia, Die Weltwoche says, shows that the will to sacrifice has its source in religion rather than in Hitlerite patriotism. Every returned Nazi soldier asks: “For whom do we conquer all this, and are we really getting something out of it?” They feel their suffering useless if it has only helped to enrich the powerful businessmen (meaning

P)—A threat by Home Secretary Herbert Morrison to suppress the London Daily Mirror unless it ceases its “irresponsible” criticism of the government and the war effort threatened to blow up info a major political crisis today.
