AT THE MOMENT, the Columbus Red Birds, 1941

. American association champions, don’t look the part. ... ' They are to furnish the visiting attraction at local Vic- . tory field when the Indianapolis Indians lift the lid on the __ new campaign April 16, and are already worrying about

their strength, or lack of it. Bob Hooey, Ohio State Journal sports editor, who is in camp ‘with the Birds at Lake Worth, Fla., gives it to you in this ‘fashion: “Entering the second lap of training, the Red Birds miss by miles

‘any resemblance to last year’s crack outfit. Only a few of the old

faces are around, “The hard-hitting Ray Sanders and the drive-’em-in Bert Haas

"are missing. Also gone are Bob Repass and the veteran Jimmy

Bucher. Only young Lou Klein and George Myatt remain on the infield. Harry Walker and Buck Jones are absentees from the outPitchers Johnny Groazicki, Murry Dickson and Harry Brecheen, who won more games among them than the eighth-place Milwaukee Brewers did last year, are performing elsewhere. “So one can see that new Manager Eddie Dyer hasn't much from last year’s championship team to work with in preparing for a defense of Columbus’ laurels. “Dyer has eight pitchers at present. This array includes Preacher Roe (11-9), Red Barrett (7-5) and Frank Gabler (6-6) from last year’s staff. Bill Crouch, down from the Phils and Cards, and Ken Burkhart, recalled from Syracuse, are the other experienced A. A. hurlers available at present. Walter Brown, obtained from the

~ Giants, has not accepted terms.

Infield Material Runs to Quantity

“OTHERS ON the Columbus hill staff are Ted Wilks, who won 20 and lost 10 for Dyer at Houston last year, and Gil Dobbs and Bilt Osborne, two rookie righthanders from the Mid-Atlantic league. The

‘infield material appears to lean to quantity rather than quality at

this time. . . . In addition to Klein and Myatt, Floyd Young and John Burman are on the roster; also Jack Angle and John Antonelli, both

_up from Houston.

“Behind the bat the Red Birds appear to be well fortified. . . .

Tommy Heath is preparing for another good year, . . . As Heath's

assistant, Floyd Beal, up from Columbus of the Sally league, is round-

«ing into form.

“Max Marshall and Augie Bergamo are the outfield holdovers

from 1941. Along with them are Hooper Triplett and Bill Rabe, Red "Bird yearlings, who were farmed out last year.”

f J » # #" t J 2 YOUNGSTOWN AND AKRON have pulled out of league base-

“ball for the duration and this mid-Atlantic league will go to the

1942 post with six clubs. . . . Akron won the pennant last year. . The Three-I league also is on thin ice. . . . It is short two clubs and intends to try it with six. ... The Western league tossed in the sponge. The scarcity of talent to round out minor league teams is becoming acute even in the class AA circuits. .

: ‘Golden Gloves tournaments are expected to furnish the bulk of the

entries in the Indiana A. A. U, championships event to be held at . A. B, Scott, Hammond's city recreation director, will act as tourney manager. ... No A. A. U. boxing meet was held in Indiana last year.

The April event is open to all registered amateur boxers. . . . Win-

‘ners in the eight weight divisions will represent this state in the National A. A. U. meet which will be staged in Boston on April 13,

14 and 17. Fred DeBorde, 476 S. Meridian st., is chairman of the Indiana A. A. U. boxing committee. . . . He will be in charge of tournament boxers from the Indianapolis, area. . . . Boxers who have fought on professional cards since the 1942 Golden Gloves tourneys are ineligible to compete in A. A. U. competition.

8 ” ” “ov ' ” ” LB THAT 1942 football schedule being rigged up by Notre Dame is an eye-popper: . , . Although some dates are tentative, the plan calls for 11 games, including four with Western conference schools, Navy (Annapolis), Army (West Point), Stanford, Southern California, Georgia Tech, Great Lakes naval training station and Iowa naval aviation training school. Under the arrangements proposed (depending upon certain schedule shifts), the Irish gridders will be host to Georgia Tech, Stanford, United States naval academy, Michigan, Northwestern and Southern California.

at home, the Caps have lost only five and out of the last 23 games they have played both at home and]; on the road they have lost only three. See? And, on top of the law of averages, the Caps’ fan has definitely in his favor the fact that tonight's contest is a “must” one with Manager Herbie Lewis. And he has imparted that delicate information to his boys who realize that losing tonight's game may mean the difference between splitting $5000 and $3000 pots. You guess how delicate a subject that is: Of course, as Manager Herbie admits himself, anything can happen in a play-off game and usually does. : But, he says he’s confident of the outcome of tonight's game. “We've just GOT to win this one,” is the way he puts it. Remember—

And, in the past, when the Duke has said that a game “has GOT to be won” it usually has wound up (Remember last

Cleveland?) “If we win tonight's game, we are a cinch to win at least one at Springfield and then we can win the last one here at home,” predicted the boss of the Caps. The winner of the first three out of five games goes into the Calder Cup ‘series against the winner of the Hershey-New Haven and Cleve-land-Washington playoffs. The third game of the Indianap-olis-Springfield playoff will be played at Springfield Saturday night. And, following Herbie’s predictions through, the fourth will be played there Tuesday night and the fifth, and decisive one, here at the Coliseum next Thursday night. Got your tickets for that one yet?
