cially for passenger cars. expected theyll be good for around 3000 miles at speeds of 15 to 20 miles an hour.
‘A Detroit maker of wheels and axles improvised laminated quar-ter-sections of wood bound with a steel rim, and tried the contrivance on a trailer. It was noisy and uncomfortable, but it took “the trailer where it was supposed to go. The trailer housing section of WPB’s lumber and building materials division got interested, observed a satisfactory test on a heavily-loaded 7200-pound trailer, and decided to arrange for an experimental output of 100 or more.
Only a small pool of rubber tires is available to trailer manufacturers and these are used only to transport the vehicles from factories to trailer camps in defense areas. Once at the destination, the tires are removed and returned to the manufacturer. Research laboratories of rubber companies, ind us trial scientists and numerous independent inventors are working night and day to find something to replace rubber
tires. It is possible that a satisfac-
tory rubberless tire may be devised, WPB says, but outside of the wood =and - steel substitute nothing so far has proved of practical value. Rope tires, asphalt tires, leather tires, fabric tires have been proposed and rejected. Old casings wrapped around new tires have been suggested. Another idea is sections of solid rubber inside casings. Rope, fabric and canvas tires are out, rubber men say, because they would wear out before a car had gone a mile. - Leather tires might last a little longer but only a fraction of the life of rubber tires. And leather tires probably would cost a motorist about $120 apiece, they say.’ Asphalt or asphalt-coated fabrics would be impractical for tires but might be practical for waterproof clothing, a WPB rubber expert says. As a tire, the asphalt would melt in summer and freeze and crack in winter, he explains.
