The Washington Hatchets enter| into the state basketball tourna-|

play. It's a 18¢ considerable chagrin among the so-called experts who doped the ratings, not to mention the leading teams who have been eliminated. 3 : Crawfordsville never ‘was rated among the elite top-notchers and

in the swim only part of the time, This confusing point can have

1. The best teams in the state do not always reach the final playoff. wr : 2. The regular-season schedule is no indication ‘of a team’s strength; or, tourney play sometimes upsets a good team’s

3. The weekly ratings during the season are no darned good anyway. | : 3 Mediocres Reached Finals

No matter what the reason, the fact remains that three seemingly mediocre teams have reached the state tourney. But that is only on the basis of season records. -These same three that folded like the Italian navy during the ‘season, burned up the tourneys with some supercharged basketball. Crawfordsville lost nine games in season play—which isn’t exactly a world-beating pace. Jeffersonville, Brazil, Horace Mann, Terre: Haute Wiley, Indianapolis Washington, Franklin, Lebanon, Attica and Lafayette all defeated the Athenians. But they spurted through the playoffs with eight solid victories and exhibited the most powerful tourney offensive machine in the process. Frankfort Faded Frankfort’s Hot Dogs maintained a torrid pace early in the year, but did a partial fade-out to slip from the ranks of state leaders during January. Everett Case’s team lost seven games, all by narrow margins. The Dogs have continually put an unimpressive-looking team on the floor, but after some severe difficulties, the Dogs - pull ahead. Against Otterbein Smoky Lewis fouled out in the third quarter with Frankfort trailing, 28-27. Then John Oster came in to hit four out of five and hand Case a 42-24 win. At Hammond Ted Hazlewood had four personals in the second period, but -Billy Zobrist came in and routed “Horace Mann's defense by scoring 17 points. Rossville almost beat ‘Frankfort in the sectionals. * The point is, they're still in there. The Burris Owls lost five tilts.

but at least 11 opponents were lowcaliber. Burris: challenged for a pot early in the year and got it momentarily, but failure zainst Indiana Washington and Huntington dropped the Owls’ prestige. All in al, the answer to the dilemna probably lies in the fact that a good long-range team seldom makes the best tourney material. There is the old chestnut of Indiana basketball that no outfit can win all year and take the tourneys too. > Well, Washington’s Hatchets stand a sweet chance to make that rule look silly. But the three other finalists, with “semi” season records and hot tourney streaks, were all set to prove the inconsistency of Hoosier high school round-ball,
