‘Dodgers Will Outlast Cards’

By JACK GUENTHER United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, March '10.—It is hardly a militant secret that war has complicated the chores of tabbing pennant winners. is observation doesn’t constitute news but it does have a purpose. It is the advance alibi for a prediction. The prediction is that in my unsolicited ‘opinion the Brooklyn Dodgers will pick up the marbles in the National league for the second year. The race will be close, but once again the Brooks will out-last St. Louis. With due allowance for the war, there are two assets held by the Dodgers as of today. The first is that the slogan “age before beauty” never rang truer than in these times of selective service. No one knows how long baseball will hang together, but as long as .we have the game we’ll have most of the Dodgers to play it. Average 30 Years There are men subject to the draft, of course. Don Padgett, Peewee Reese and others may follow Cookie Lavagetto and Herman Franks, but the Brooklyn line-up, including the top six pitchers, averages slightly more than 30 years. The crucial department always is pitching and St. Louis takes an advantage here, but not a great one. Highbe and Wyatt won 32 games apiece last year. With Brooklyn’s power to bolster him, Larry|P Prench should do better with the flock than in Chicago. Hugh Casey, Curt Davis and the venerable Fitz aren't kids, but neither are they likely to blow easily.
