LER Old Direct Type Lamps Can Be Converted Into Indirect Ones|s
FITTING IN with the war-inspired trend to conserve and get the maximum results from household equipment is a method of converting old direct-type lamps—both floor and table varieties—into indirect illumi-
nating units.
Not only does the indirect lamp furnish more light for the amount of electrical current used, but it also makes the room in which it is used
a more attractive spot—and it looks as if we were going to spend a great deal more time at home, doing -war work or resting up from war work. By transforming an old-lamp, too, thrift is promoted. The - wonderworking in this case is done by using convertible adapters—a diffusing bowl of glass or plastic, a bulb socket with a casing made to hold the bowl, and the necessary length of wire and plug.
Some of these come already assembled, ready to attach to the old lamp by a home craftsman. Or an electrical supply dealer can furnish both materials and work.
Diffusing bowls are available in many sizes, but for the average table and floor lamp, the 8 to 10inch sizes probably will be most satisfactory for use with 100, 150 and 300-watt bulbs. : If the old lamp shade is to be used with the new bowl, it should be from 8 to 10 inches across the top opening fo fit the bowl; the bottom diameter should be from 16 to 20 inches, and the shade should be 9 to 12 inches deep so that the bowl will be masked,
with an inner lining of white is best for use with lamp. Conversion of will not be satisfactory the lamp is at least 20 inches high, because the glaring light bulb will be visible at heights below 20
