CIRCLE ABOUT 12 YEAR§ AGO, a young, Viennese actress, then a rising star in the theater of re- - publican Germany, lifted her voice in a Munich restaurant to . call a ‘pale-faced, mad-eyed, Nazi big shot seated nearby a “fool.” The actress was Elizabeth Berg‘ner, The fool wis Adolf Hitler. S.-rnade picture, it is. a dramatic story of the French underground movement against Nazi occupation and the best Hollywood job on world war 2 I have seen.

There is in this picture about every form of adventure you could find in a wild-west thriller, but what brings you up to the very edge of your seat is its newsreel There is Miss Bergner, too, whose stardom has been: dimmed somewhat by her absence from the screen. She can show many a Hollywood clotheshorse how acting is done. She does. The dramatization of vital contemporary history is more exciting to me than a dozen deputies chasing a dozen bad men in a dozen westerns. Here are some real bad men and some real - heroes. One thing I don’t understand. Why did Universal push this picture aside at the last minute to give “What's Cookin’,” a slaphappy musical, the feature spot on the Circle’s bill? The Universal men did tell me that “What’s Cookin’ ” has a better box appeal. I wonder.

Her last picture, “To Be or Not To Be,” is a jibe at the enemy for whose defeat she sold bonds.

4 NEIGHBORHOOD THEATER PATRONS will have an opportunity to see two of the academy award stars in action this week-end. The Tacoma has two features with the winners in them: Joan Fontaine in “Suspicion,” the picture that won for her the coveted “Oscar,” and Walter Pidgeon, who received his prize for work in “How Green Was My Valley,” teamed up with Rosalind Russell in “Design for
Scandal.” The shows will run tomorrow through Tuesday. “Design for Scandal” may be seen at the Cinema and Esquire for the last time tonight and “Suspicion” will wind up its run at the Parker also fonight. ” ” ”
EARL CUNNINGHAM at the Fountain Square has informed us that “Babes on Broadway,” which has been showing at that theater since last Monday, has been so warmly received by the south side patrons that he is extending its run through tomorrow. 2 2 8
HERE'S A FEW notes we received from Don Wright at the Rivoli regarding “Blues in the Night,” which will be at his theater Monday though Wednesday. It has five hit tunes, including the
title song, which has made an excellent showing on the “Hit Parade,” and it has two bands, Jimmy Lunceford and Will Os-
borne. 2 s ”
APPARENTLY THEATER fans are taking a shine to the serial
judging from the number of theaters it has been showing at. Now it opens at the Sheridan Thursday and will be run each week Thursday through Saturday, according to Frank Flynn.

Rationers Face Typewriter Loss
Employees of the county civil ian defense and state rationing offices may soon be without their typewriters. The reason is the rationing of the machines by the WPB in ‘Washington. All typewriters loaned or rented by a dealer must be back in the dealer’s office by April 1. : In the state rationing administrators office are 11 machines and there are about as many in the county defense council’s office which have been “loaned” by Indianapolis typewriter dealers.
