DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am the sixth child inh a family of 11. I am a senior in high school, not too popular but enough so. I am a little above average in most of
|my studi¢s, but I am just so dis-
gusted that I don’t event want to study. We are poor, but if mother
_| knew how to manage we could have
just three times what we have. She “tdoesn’t know how to cook to save things and doesn’t teach us any table manners at all. She let us all grow ‘up ignorant to find out what we know from ‘other people. 1 took home economics at school and have learned many things that I never would have known. I try to do my part at home and teach my younger brothers and sister what is right, but mother thinks I am trying to be boss and tells the kids not to listen to’ me. They will learn. better I, hope as they grow up and get into high school, but I-just hage to think of their growing up as I did. Wy mother and I never did get along. I guess it is because I refused to stay ignorant. I love my father very much and would do
| anything in the world for him, but
not my mother. I know I shouldn't be like that, but how can I help
it? What can. I do? DISGUSTED. » » ”
Answer-—You say you love your father and would do anything in The only thing you can do for him that will really be a help is to learn how to get along with your mother. As it is you are in competition with her and she resents it. That is what causes the trouble. ‘ I haver’t a doubt but that you know more about running the house economically than she does. Your schooling has given you that advanitege. But it is not very smart of you to let her know that you feel superior tb her. It is fine for you to do your part at home and do it the way you learned in school, but try to be more tactful about what you “doFund "don’t “criticizes your mother’s methods. It only sets her against learning anything new from you. Try to shed the feeling of responsibility which you have for the! younger children and let them learn as you learned, in school. Their mother mgy be ineffectual but still she is their mother, not you. Any attempt or. your part to usurp her position will cause trouble. Even in homes where there is plenty of money it often lappens that the eldest daughter competes with her nother for the favor of the father and the regard of the younger children. The result is an antagonistic tension between mother and daughter. Try to let go, but don’t stop studying in your dis--
need all the knowledge you can
‘accumulate in order to run your {own home smoothly. Save your skill
for the management of your own future family and let your mother run hers even though she does everything wrong according to your standards. =JANE JORDAN.
