Professional boxing will return to the local spdrts scene next Friday night at the Armory when Lloyd Carter of t Hercules A. C. will . present a six-event pro slugfest with Bud | Cottey, Indianapolis lightweight | contender, battling . Sammy Scully, Chicago 185-pound-er, in the 10-round main event. Carter expects to give many of the outstanding local scrappers a “preak” on the card, and although no “big name” boxer will head the - parade of talent, every pug who enters the ring Friday night will be well known to the fans as a belter who punches and keeps punching. Action aplenty will be the keynote. Scully, the clever Windy City mauler who appeared here last year + and won, vietories over Lloyd Pine . and Charley| Eshman, has a solid ring record | which includes wins over such outstanding lightweights as Willie Jpyce, Billy Marquart, Gene Spencer and Eddie Lander. Close Fight With Jenkins He holds a draw with Nick Castiglione and| dropped a close 10rounder to| former lightweight champion Lew Jenkins. |The six-rqund semi-windup, al- ~ ready signed, will pit heavyweight Jethro Jeffers, 188, of Indianapolis, _ against Bob |Bryant,| 204, of Kokomo, Ind. No Advance Derby Favorite

MIAMI, March 2 (U. P.).—Combing the racing results for an advance Kentucky Derby favorite must wait until the opening of the New York racing season April 9 but until that time a place near the head of the parade of eligibles|, for Requested won't be disputed.

Reqliested, | 3-year-old son ' of Questionaire end Fair Perdita, won the preview for Derby eligibles by beating a field of 16 in the $25,000added Flamin@o stakes Saturday at Hialegh park; with the best performance of any horse this year, but He cannot be classed as the favorite until further inspection. There was some doubt concerning his cdndition today because he received a bad ¢ut high up on his leg during the race but Owner Ben Whitaker said it was “not serious.”

“Great Horse”

“That cut really looked bad but I don’t | think ‘anything will result from jt,” Whitaker said. “Requested is a great horge—his performance in the Flamingo showed that—and I think he can win the Derby. Hard-riding| Eddie Arcaro turned in ong of th¢ most sparkling victories of his career when he jockeyed the Whitaker horse under the wire dhead of Redthorn and Alsab,

The crowd sent up a tremendous “no” when the horses broke, because Request>d and Mrs, Raymond MeclIlvain’s Bright Willie, the favorite, were left far behind. The pair had been forced to start outside the gate because of the large field. Then | on the first turn, Requested was Kicked. | |

Alsab was | four lengths behind Redthorn and seven behind Requested.

SON, SHIT BY 22 FATHER DIES

Objected to Eating Supper “In the Middle of the

Afternoon.”

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind., March 2 (U. P. .—Prosecuting Attorney Lester G. Baker said today that new charges will be filled against Henry Burkhart, 73-year-old Dearborn county farmer who shot his son because he objected to “eating suppor in the middle of the afternoon.” Burkhart’s son, Harry, 41, died last night at Good Samaritan hospital in Cincinnati of injuries inflicted last Wednesday. Charges of assault and battery and attempt to commit a felony were first filed against Burkhart. The father, a custodian at a Lawrenceburg distillery, wept when told |— his son was dead. He had previously maintained a stoic calm, refusing to say anything other than “3:30 p. m. is a pretty time of the day to have supper.”

Ate at Son’s Home

Burkhart, officers said, had been eating his supper at the home of the son. The meals were served in mid-afternoon so that young Burk-|, hart could.go to work at the Law- |" renceburg postoffice shortly afterward. But last Wednesday, Burkhart told authorities, he could “stand it no longer” and followed his son to the porch and discharged a shotgun into his son’s head. Sheriff's officers captured Burkhart at a suburban Greendale cemetery after the father had taken several shots at the authorities.

FOUR MERCHANTMEN SUNK IN ONE ATTACK

AN EAST CANADA PORT, March 2 (U.P.).—At least four and possibly eight united nations merchantmen, apparently from a convoy, have been torpedoed in the western Atlantic, it was disclosed today. A total of 111 survivors from three tankers and a freighter have been landed here. They said at least 58 seamen were dead or missing, but some might have been picked up by vessels bound for other points. The attacks occurred at night and without warning. Crews of two tankers were rescued without. loss within an hour. Thirty-eight men were missing from a third tanker, from which 11 survivors were landed, and 20 apparently perished

when a freighter sank and capsized | FounD

a life-boat which had just been launched. Nineteen, including five passengers, were rescued. The four known sinkings brings the toll of submarine warfare off the. Canadian coast to 22 since inid-January.

FALSE RAID ALARM HEARD IN HONOLULU

HONOLULU, March 2 (U. P.).— Hawaii's aircraft warning system flashed the portentous word yesterday, 12 weeks after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor: “Unknown elements at sea.” Air raid sirens shrieked and within a few minutes fighter planes and bombers were roaring into the air ready ‘o meet a challenge. It was 9:40 a. m. when the alarm sounded. Most residents were at breakfast. Some grabbed their new gas masks and ran for home shelters; other stood in their yards or gardens, eager to see action. It was a false alarm, but an efficient dress rehearsal.
