Last Dec. 21, Secretary of Navy Frank Knox announced
that 14 German submarines
damaged by American naval lantic. In that report Col. Knox did not disclose the number of submarines attacked. Ir | Col. Knox reported yesterday that in 56 attacks during January and the first 23 days of February, the navy was believed {o have de- . stroyed three German submaiins and damaged four. Some evidence of success in the other atiacks was not conclusive.
There is a gap of 10 days in the time covered by the two Knox statements. A navy spokesman said it was quite probable that four or five attacks were made on enemy submarines during that period-— from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1.

Col. Knox’s latest report indicated that gs great .a toll of allied shipping is being taken by German submarines this month as during January. Fewer attacks have been made against the undersea raiders this month, but that may be because the submarines have extended = their operating area southward to the Caribbean after earlier attacks farther north. Between Jan. 1' and Feb. 23, Col. Knox said, - 114 united nation merchantmen were attacked.. Of these, 60 were attacked this month. He didn’t say how many were actually sunk. Col. Knox provided no new specific information on the results of the anti-submarine campaign in the Pacific. He did say, however, that besides the. three Japanese submarines announced sunk between Dec. 10, 1941, and Feb. 24 “there is no evidence of further sinkings of enemy submarines in Pacific waters.”
Proud of Record
Col. Knox said yesterday that “Americans ought to be damn proud” of what the navy is doing on the Pacific battlefront, including its action in co-operation with Dutch naval and air forces in defense of the Netherlands East Indies. Col. Knox’ statement was mace to a question as to whether he regarded the fleet as doing “pretty well” considering the size of the American forces in the Far Pacific area. Referring . eomplaints in some quarters that American tankers and other ships are not being armed with guns f enough for their defense against enemy planes and submarines, the secretary said that the vessels are “being armed as fast as possible.”
Issues Communique
At the same time the secretary issued the following communique, summarizing previously published losses inflicted by U. S. naval forces upon the Japanese navy and merchant marine in the period from Dec. 10, 1941, until Feb. 24, 1942, inclusive. “The following information is compiled: from navy department communiques beginning with No. 1 and ending with No. 44, and complements similar ‘information summarizing enemy losses and damage published in recent communiques of the United States army. “In accordance with its previously announced policy, the navy does not indulge in the policy of overstating its losses that we inflict upon the enemy, or in understating the losses inflicted upon ‘us. “The navy will report only such facts as can be substantiated. Thus the tabulation of vessels damaged does not include many enemy ships thought to have been damaged, lack of conclusive , evidence precluding specific announcements in these instances.

and during the recent raid on Marshall and Gilbert islands. “In accordance with establishment. of naval policy, submarine sinkings are never announced until it is reasonably certain that the enemy has become cognizant of their loss. This explains the time lag in connection with various reports. There is evidence, however, of further sinkings of enemy submarines in Pacific waters, but their announcement will not be made public until announcement of full reports have been made to the navy department and absolute surety’ is determined. “Prior to the vicious attack made on the united nations by the Jap-
pride of the Japanese merchant marine consisted of three 17,000-ton luxury ships .of the Yawata class. One of these ships is known to have been converted to serve as an aircraft carrier.’ The United States naval forces have sunk one merchantman of the Yawata class, and one aircraft carrier of the same class, leaving only one such vessel known to be in service with the enemy.
- Tabulation of Vessels
“Tabulation follows by type of vessel: : “Battleships: One of Kongo class damaged. “Aircraft carriers: One sunk, one believed sunk. “Cruisers: Two sunk. “Destroyers: Seven sunk, one believed sunk. “Submarines: damaged. “Seaplane tenders: One believed sunk. “Minesweepers: One sunk. “Gunboats: One sunk. “Fleet tankers: Three sunk. “Transports: 13 sunk, two believed sunk. “Supply ships and merchantmen: 16 sunk. “Miscellaneous (type unidentified): Six sunk, two believed sunk, three damaged. “Summary: “Total announced losses inflicted upon the Japanese in the period outlined above are as follows: “Combatant vessels: 15 sunk, three believed sunk, two damaged. “Non-combatant vessels: 38 sunk, four believed sunk, three damaged. “Total combantant and non-com-batant: Sunk 53, seven believed sunk, five damaged.
Action in Atlantic
“Atlantic area: “During January, 1942, of the united nations registry had torpedoes fired at them in waters contiguous to the United States. In addition 38 other ships were attacked in the area west of 30 degrees west longitude. One enemy submarine is believed to have been sunk, three are believed to have been damaged and 34 additional attacks were inconclusive in evidence of damage. “In February, up to and including the 23d instant, 23 ships of the united nations had been attacked by enemy submarines in U. 8. coastal waters and 31 additional ships in the area west of 30 degrees west longitude. Two enemy submarines are believed to have been sunk and one damaged in these areas. In addition 15 attacks have been made on enemy submarines by our forces with inconclusive results.
