Survivors at. Puerto Rico Tell of Surviving Two - Clashes With Subs.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Feb. 26 (U. P.).—Members of the crew of the -3685-ton: British tanker La Car-

ship had survived two German submarine attacks within four hours but ‘succumbed to a third three

hours later.’ The survivors did not know whether ong submarine or two or three attacked them. The first, at-

the ship amidship with two torpedoes. A blast from the ship’s gun caused it to submerge at once, and some witnesses thought. a hit had{soso been made on it. A second attack was made af, 11 p. m. A torpedo was fired at La (Carriere but missed. At 2 a. in, yesterday, with the whole crew ¢n deck, a torpedo struck the bow of the ship and it sank in three minutes.

There were 42 men in the crew. They took to lifeboats, Twenty men arrived at Guanica ‘in southern Puerto Rico ‘yesterday in one boat and three more, with the body of a fourth, who had died en route, arrived in § second boat an hour later, Survivors said the last they saw [jof Capt. EICHHORN TO REPORT ON WINGER OUSTER

Fred Eichhorn, public service commission chairman, said today he would issue a statement tomorrow concerning the dismissal of Harry V. Wenger, Republican, chief engineer of the commission for the past 13 years. Slated to replace Mr, Wenger is Hugh Abbot}, a Democrat, who until recently Was an engineer for the federal power commission at Salt Lake City. Mr. Abbott worked for the commissjon as an engineer several years ago. Friends of Mr. Wenger said he did not plan to take action under the state merit law for engineers which provides that an engineer may not be removed for political reasons and permits appeals to the state board of engineers and then to the circuit court.
