Miler May Get

Pace-Setter

NEW YORK, Feb. 25 (U. P)— Boy, look up Leslie MacMitchell’s priority number because he needs a windshield to set a new mile record. That's right—a windshield—and it doesn't seem fantastic either when New York university’s boy wonder explains the difficulties he has trying to set a new indoor standard at his favorite distance. “You know it's amazing the things that crop up to spoil a record run around 22 turns of a board-floor mile,” MacMitchell said. “In the first place, I just cannot get used to setting the pace. In practice, sure, everything goes Off swell but when the gun sounds in Madison Square Garden—gowie, everything goes topsy-turvy and all I ¢éan do is run the best I know how. : Needs Pace-Setter “You know, it’s much easier for me when somebody else is setting the pace and helping fo cut off the wind generated by a racing pace. That's right—if I can follow somebody around for a greater part of the distance it acts as a sort of a windshield and is a definite advantage.” In all of his five mile victories this year, MacMitchell has been practically alone but Saturday will find him jammed among eight §7. | Other challengers—QGilbert Dodds, &| gant Mitchell, defender ‘Walt Mehl, .|Jim Rafferty, Leroy Schwarskopf, *| Ed Culp, Joe McCluskey and Cuil. lermo Huidobro. The hoped-for pace-setter may be provided in Dodds or the probable second-place battle between Mitchell and Rafferty may force MacMitchell to better the existing ‘world standard of 4:074. Dodds is the logical choice because he gave Greg Rice such a Stiff battle in the Milirose and

grand performance in which he not only upset 13-5 betting odds but actually belted out the big, broadshouldered Negro who was supposed to flatten Pastor in an early round.

It was the first full-count kayo éver registered against who outweighted the New York veteran 197% pounds to 181, and who entered the ring riding a string of 19 straight victories, including 17 kayoes, Superior Skill

Referee Joe Sedley: counted out Franklin at 2:08 of the eighth round after Pastor had given a memorable demonstration of the superiority of boxing skill over the sheer power of a slugger.

Franklin who had knocked out Tony Musto and big Abe Simon in less time than it took Joe Louis, seemed destined to turn the same trick on Pastor in the first two rounds when he exploded thundering punches on the smaller man’s head and body. He had Bobbing Bob in such trouble several times that Pastor's manager, little Jimmy Johnston, was screaming from beneath the corner, “Keep moving Bob—keep moving.” And Bob kept moving! like a distraught MONgoose~with flying feet and flickering body.

Franklin Slowed

Pastor's killing pace and body blows had Franklin slowed to a walk in the fifth, and the New York veteran—sensing certain vie-

perately in the sixth, though he lost the round. That was his last stand. Busy Bob barraged him unmercis fully in the seventh and continued {the attack in the eighth, In the latter session; a left hook to the jaw buckled Frahklin's knees, Then Pastor forced him into the ropes and Famed leather to the head, until a hard right hook brought Lem lurching off the ropes into a nose dive to the canvas. He lay stretched out on the canvas, half supported by his blows; then staggered to his feet just after the count of 10 had been reached. Franklin had no alibis, He merely said, “Pastor was so fast, I couldn't see him- half the time—-much less. hit him. And he’s a much harder

Jacobs announced today. The title shot will be the second for Simon, who was technically knocked out, by the champion in 13 rounds last March 21. Pastor, Simon Stablemates Most observers believed that Bob Pastor of New York had earned the March Louis bout last night by knocking out Lem Franklin of Cleveland, Both Pastor and Simon are managed by James Joy Johnston, Louis will donate all but his expenses to the army relief fund. Jacobs similarly will contribute all profits while Simon will turn over two and a half per cent of his 15 per cent purse. The bout has been scheduled for 15 rounds. - Louis knocked out Buddy Baer of California in the first round last month in a similar show held for benefit of the navy relief fund. Since being stopped by Louis a year ago, Simon has done little. He knocked out two obscure boxers, Pete Tamolinis and J. D. Turner, was held to a draw by Turkey Thompson and was knocked out by Franklin at Cleveland last October. :
