Nasa Feb. 25 (U. P).— A. Glassford|
Admiral] » commander of united nations naval forces the southwest Pacific, has been requested to report on charges t anti-aircraft am- . munition on one of his American vessels was only 30 per cent effective, it was disclosed today. Rear W. H. P. Blandy, chief of the bureau of naval ord‘nance, told house naval affairs committee he | had asked Vice Ad- , miral Glassford for the report following broadcast charges that the ammunition the ship was issued in 1931 and | had proven below standard in abtual warfare. Complete public hearings on the charges have been ordered. Rear A W. H. P." Blandy, naval ordn chief, told the committee that “mere age” of ammuni‘tion does not mean that it is ineffective.
Ammunition Made in 1930
‘He said that a preliminary inquiry indicated that the ship in ‘question was supplied with ammunition prepared in 1930 and 1931 ' and issued ta the vessel at the Cavite naval in the Philippine islands in 1937 after thorough tests. The ship engaged in four target practices, he| said, and the com- . mander never has reported its ammunition as ineffective. He added that a seaplane carrier equipped with similar | ammunition. recently shot down a four-engined enemy pombe and badly damaged an-

his wife, Elizabeth, had chosen to die. : “Before I depart from life by my own free will, I want to do my last duty, which is to thank this marvelous ' country--Brazil—which so hospitably received me,” he had written. “Each day I spent here I loved this country more and in no other could I have had such hopes of reconstructing my life.
An Affectionate Good-by
“After I saw the country of my own language fall, and my spiritual land — Europe — destroying itself, and I have reached the age of 60, it would require immense strength to reconstruct my life, and my energy exhausted by long years of peregrination as one without a country. “Therefore, I believe it is time to end a life that was dedicated only to ‘spiritual work, considering

human liberty and my: own'’as the greatest wealth in the world. “I leave an affectionate good-by to all my friends.” Zweig's major works, principally biographies, included “Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles,” “Erasmus of Rotterdam,” “Marie Antoinette,” “Romaine Rolland,” “Joseph Fouche,” “Mental Healers: Franz Mesmer, Mary Baker Eddy, Sigund Freud,” “Master Builders,” “The Tide of Fortune,” “Conqueror of the Seas’—The Story of Magellan —and “Kaleidoscope.” But he was a jew, and that, in the eyes of the Nazis, outweighed his: contributions to German litera~ ture. When the Germans invaded Austria, he fled, and they burned some of his books at a public fire in. the square of Salzburg. Hi exile at first appeared to have had no effect on him, but toward the end of his life, an overtone of despair crept into his writings and lectures. Viking Press, his American published, published his latest book the day before he died. It was “Amerigo: A Comedy of Errors in History,” concerning Vespucci’s “Discovery” of America.

SHE MAY CALL YOU by your first name now and then, but “when she calls you up for that final “check flight,” you'd better know your loops. It’s strictly regulation with her.
