New Routes Are Selected © To Replace Imperiled

Burma Road.

CHUNGKING, Feb. 20 (U. P).— China looked to India today: for a Jus ne successor to the imperiled : road.

While Japanese spearheads pushed westward toward the Ran-goon-Chungking supply line, Chi- . ese observers expressed confidence that allied war materials could be kept flowing. over one of these substitute routes: | 1—By ship to Bombay, across India by rail to Calcutta, north by rail to the Chinese frontier, then fem rugged mountains over the ew Assam road to- Chungking. ‘ 2—By air from Calcutta to Lashfo, Burma, thence over the Burma road by truck to Kunming and Chungking. | 3—Eastward over the IranianTurkish railway to Alma Ata, Rusa, (thence overland about. 1600 iles along the old “Red route” to chow, China, 500 miles northest of Chungking. 3

Kai-shek had reached an agreement during conversatiohs wita Indian leaders whereby Indian routes * would ‘supplement the threatened Burma road. The Assam road, a. gigantic new Undertaking, will ‘cross 10,000-foot Iountain ranges and at least three . great rivers. From Kunming it will stretch westward, cutting north of the Burma road. Then angling south, it will join the Indian railway system in -the Mekong border area to where the Indian railway is being extended. The present railnead is at Makum, 550 airline miles | northeast of Calcutta.

Hunter Neighbors Could Save MacArthur.

PALL MALL, Tenn, Feb. 20 (U. P.) .—Sergt. Alvin C. York would be mighty proud to round up some of his mountain neighbors and their squirrel rifles and help Gen. Douglas MacArthur clean Japanese snipers

out of the trees of Bataan peninsula.

The sergeant, who killed several dozen Germans with his rifle and captured 126 while single-handedly wiping out a machine gun nest in the first world war, is.an ardent admirer of Gen. MacArthur. He could hardly contain himself when he learned that an officer had told Frank Hewlett, the United Press correspondent with Gen, MacArthur’s forces, that trying to find Japanese snipers was like looking for a squatting squirrel, and York and his

neighbors were needed to handle]

“I'd be mighty proud to start for there tomorrow,” York said. “And if you were to start tomorrow morning getting together a bunch of oldtime squirrel hunters with steady trigger-fingers, you'd have more than you could handle right here in Fentress county before night. “Why, there's “enough old-time squirrel shooters scattered around the hills of Tennessee and Kentucky to pick out the eyes of every Jap in the Philippines without wasting a shot. I'm gq little older than I was in the last war, but I can shoot just as straight, and nothing would do me more good than to leave tomorrow for the Philippines.” He said the United States “ought to get some help to Gen MacArthur, some airplanes, some men right away. If the sacrifice would be too great, then we ought to get Gen. MacArthur out of there before he can be captured. He's too valuable a man to lose.”
