STOCKS ARE HIGHER, DESPITE SINGAPORE

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (U. P)— Stocks displayed mild rallying tendencies in quiet dealings today, indicating that the fall of Singapore had been discounted in last Tuesday's sharp price break. Chrysler pushed up 1% points to 49% after opening unchanged and then lost most of the recovery in afternoon dealings. General Motors replaced an early loss with a fair gain but also gave up a large part of the advance. The setback from the highs was led by, rail shares. Sante Fe opened % point lower a 343%, rallied to 35%, and then re acted to 34%. Du Pont gained a point to 123 but lost part of the -rise whe directors cut the dividend on th stock to $1.25 a share from $1.7 previously. Bethlehem Steel an U. S. Steel steadied on small gai after showing advan¢es running Alalmost a point. Gaigs in © main sections also outnumberes losses, with weakness limited to few special issues.

New insurance sales of .$4,255,062 brought the total in force for the American United Life Insurance Co. of Indianapolis to an all-time high of $287,869,669, according to President George A. Bangs. Hog prices reached another new high at the Indianapolis stockyards today, the Agriculture Marketing] Service reported. Hogs weighing more than 160

pounds were 15 cents higher than Saturday’s prices in early trading and some were up as much as 20 to 26 cents. The early practical top was $13.15 with a few being held for $13.25. Receipts included 2435 cattle, 457 calves, 6053 hogs and 2152 sheep.
