REAL SILK TURNS

$15. Lambs, $12.

Real Silk Hosiery Mills today re-

®| ported that the preliminary esti-

mate for 1941 will show a consolidated profit of $501,438.12, after depreciation and all charges, but before an appropriation of $150,000 as a reserve for possible future losses and contingencies. That would leave a balance of $351,438.12 transferred to earned surplus which compares with a consolidated loss of $341,955.68 for 1940. The company made no provision for Federal income taxes this year because of the loss carried over from 1940 and other deductions which the company believes it can substantiate.

APARTMENT PLAN HERE TURNED DOWN

Plans of two builders to erect 33 family houses on the North Side

City Zoning Board. The Board denied petitions for variances for the two projects after more than 100 residents and property owners from two areas protested the multiple housing plans at a hearing yesterday. M. G. Gerdenich had asked permission to build the apartment buildings on the east side of College Ave. from 64th St. to White River at a cost of $660,000. When his project was voted down, he announced he would build 33 doubles instead. That area is zoned for doubles. Permission to erect 24 doubles

H. Wurster. This project also was turned down after a large delegation of residents from that area remonstrated. They protested that two blocks of doubles would depreciate the values of single family houses in the vicinity. James H. Ward was granted a variance to erect five double houses at the corner of Neal Ave. and Maryland St. No protests were made to this project. Several other petitions for variances to convert residential property into doubles and duplexes were granted without remonstrance.

To be deductible, a loss arising from “fires, storms, shipwrecks, or other casualty” need not be connected with the taxpayer's trade or business. If his home or his

automobile is destroyed by fire, or his summer bungalow damaged by flood or storm, he may claim a deduction for the loss sustained. A loss occasioned by damage to

an automobile maintained for plea-

from the faulty driving of the tax-

payer or other person operating the automobile, but is not due to the willful act or negligence of the taxpayer, is a deductible loss in the computation of net income. If damage to a taxpayer's automobile results from the faulty driving of the operator of an automobile with which the automobile of the taxpayer collides, the loss occasioned to the taxpayer by such damage is likewise deductible. Loss of property by theft or burglary is an allowable deduction, and need not be incurred in trade or business. Hence, the loss occasioned by the theft of jewelry or an automobile used for pleasure and convenience is deductible. It must be established, however, that the property actually was stolen. Should circumstances attending the loss leave the owner in doubt as to whether it was stolen or lost, the claim would not be allowed. Losses from wagering transac-

A loss is deductible only in the year in which it is sustained, even though, as in the case of a thef' or casualty, it may not be discovered until a later year. Losses compensated for by insurance or otherwise, of course, are not deductible. However, in the event the amount of insurance is not sufficient to recompense for the loss sustained, the excess of the loss over the amount of the insurance is deductible.
