Boy Scout Troop 48 will celebrate its 17th anniversary with a covereddish dinner in Linwood Christian Church at 6:30 p. m. Wednesday. The anniversary falls in Boy Scout Week, a nation-wide observance of the 32d anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America. Harold Keltch, scoutmaster, will

Horror of Japs' Bombing of Refuges Ship Described By American Oil Man Who Escaped From Freighter

BATAVIA, Feb. GAn ATeTan oii man has just arrived from Singapore with a dramatic story of his escape aboard a freighter that was shelled by Japanese artillery as it withdrew from the eastern shore of Johore Strait. He was the only American among 65 refugees crammed aboard the vessel. Three Japanese bombers discovered the freighter somewhere along the sea route to Java. Three times in two hours big two-motored bomb-

ers attacked the ship from an al-|

titude of 1000 feet. Sixteen bombs were dropped but the only one that struck home penetrated the engine room. Here's the Yank’s own story: “A few minutes before the attack, a big blond, youthful engineer had borrowed my stock of American magazines. “Then a Chinese scholar, a graduate of Cambridge University, offered to change my submarine watch from 11 o'clock onward for his later trick on deck. I surrendered my magazines but kept my
