VOICE from the Balcony by FREMONT POWER
WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER HANDY HAS COME a long way since that Fgt he had to sleep on the cobblestone streets of St. Louis. He was 18 then, playing a trumpet for $2 and $3 a night—that is, whenever he could find a job. That night he couldn’, and so there was nothing to do but flop any place he could. Years afterward he rented a room in Memphis and wrote a song called “The St. Louis Blues.” It sold 10,000 copies in the first two weeks and he’s never had to worry about food and lodgings since. In a normal year the song brings him $20,000. And, of course, there are

Premiere of ‘My Gal Sal’ May Be Here
It's Story of Paul Dresser, Written by Theodore Dreiser.
Indianapolis may be the scene of a world motion picture premiere in April—with all the usual Hollywood trimmings—Tommy Thompson, a 20th Century-Fox representative, said here today. The picture is “My Gal Sal,” a technicolor production based on the life of Paul Dresser, a Terre Haute, Ind, native who composed the song from which the movie takes its title and also “On the Banks of the Wabash,” “The Blue and the Grey.” “Just Tell Them That You Saw Me,” “I Wonder Where She Is Tonight” and numerous other hits of the 20s.

The script has been written by Dresser’s brother, who spells his He is Theodore Dreiser, the novelist known best probably for “An American Tragedy.” Mr.- Thompson said the premiere would be held either in Indianapolis or Terre Haute, but that his studio hadn’t as yet decided which. The

BUTCHER BOY GUILTY OF SLAYING GIRL, 14
NEWARK, N. J, Feb, 6 (U. P.). Tunis Quick, 21, a lovesick butcher’s boy who shot and killed pretty Rosemary Abbott, 14, while she was in the arms of his rival, faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison today. A jury of middle-aged men, after almost three hours’ deliberation, found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter yesterday afternoon. He paled, and his mother, Mrs. Ruth West, cried. “I expected it,” she said. “I suppose it’s a fair and just verdict. I really don’t see what else they could have done.” Quick’s rival was Roslyn Romaine, his 17-year-old cousin. Testimony showed Romaine was continually wooing Quick's girls away from him.
