U, $, DENOUNCES WELDER STRIKE

Pudget Sound Ship Workers Urged by Government To Return to Work.

SEATTLE, Wash., Feb. 3 (U. PJ). —Government - encouraged defections within the ranks of independent® welders undermined the Puget Sound shipyard strike today and forced union leaders to draft “new strategy” in their jurisdictional dispute with the American Federation of Labor. The striking United Welders, Cutters and Helpers Union (Independent) refused to indicate whether it would call off its four-day walkout in the face of new demands from the War Production Board, Maritime Commission, Army and Navy, who joined in denounce ing the strike. Union leaders said they were forced to follow a néw program but they refused to reveal its details. Strikers held a mass meeting to consider the Government demands last night after Sheldon G. Knutson, secretary of the union, estimated that only about 30 per cent of the union’s membership had remained on strike. Denouncing the strike, the four Government agencies at Washington issued a statement urging the welders to resume work and ‘repudiate the leadership which has encouraged a reckless disregard of the needs of the country.”

Calls for Model Planes

High officials of the Navy Department look over models of airplanes, similar to those which Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, second from left, has asked the youth of America to build for use in training military personnel in aircraft recognition and estimation of gunnery range. A total of half a million are needed, Knox estimated—

SHOW NO MERGY TO RUSSIANS, SAY NAZIS

By ILYA EHRENBOURG Soviet War Correspondent MOSCOW, Feb. 3.—Official German documents have been -captured which show that German commanders have been ordered to let an impulse of merciless “revenge” toward Russians run rampant among their troops. I have

before me an order issuing from the

commander of the 17th German Army. It is a stunning document. It says “no leniency, no mercy is to be shown the population,” and adds: “I have noticed that the soldiers possess a healthy feeling of revenge and aversion toward all Russians. This feeling should not be suppressed... On the contrary it should be cultivated.” The order asserts that “a sharp eye ‘should be kept on anyone treating us with ill will or even indifference.”

BAD TEETH ARE NO EXCUSE NOW

‘Bite’ Put ‘in Regulations By Rehabilitation Program.

. Times Special WASHINGTON, Feb. 3.— The days when bad teeth would exempt a man from the draft are nearly over. The Selective Service organization is preparing to put in effect soon a “must” system of rehabilie tation for registrants with minor and correctible physical defects. Maj. Edwin S. Shattuck, Selective Service general counsel, said regise trants classified as “I-A remediable” would be given two choices: 1. They may go to their own doctor or dentist - on a voluntary basis, either at their own expense (if they can afford it) or at the

"Government's.

2. Otherwise, they will be certified by local draft authorities to the Adjutant General of the Army, ine ducted, and given the necessary treatment after induction. The “I-A remediable” classifica= tion is new. It involves a new physical examination system, under Army supervision. Under the old system, local doce tors passed only men held to be fit for general service, classifying those with minor defects in I-B. Men with venereal diseases may be covered by the new regulations. There is also a new “I-B remediable” classification, covering men who would be qualified for limited military service if certain defects were corrected. But there is no indication that this will be put on a “must” basis. Heretofore, all I-B’s have been automatically deferred.
