Makes Wall Street] Gloomy but Was Not Unexpected. Am Airlines An or Shoe ...

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 (U P)—|aAm Wall Street got a gloomy piece of A news after the stock market closed yesterday when directors of General Motors Corp. deciared a divi-|2 dend of 50 cents a share on the common stock. Various interpretations werein placed upon the action. It is re-|Bui®in N alized that taxes will eat up a big- Bush N 44 ger share of profits this year than|Byron Jackson ever before in G. In such instance the physician may deduct as a business expense the rental value of the rooms occupied for office purposes if he actually pays rent, and also the cost of light and heat furnished these rooms. Depreciation may also be taken on office furniture and equipment. Insurance premiums on office or other professional equipment may be deducted. A premium paid for automobile liability insurance should be apportioned and that part of the premium attributable to business may be deducted as a business expense.

per cent the previous week. (From Washington the Federal Reserve Board's weekly report on department store sales also indicated a tapering off of consumer demand. The Board reported sales in the week and the four-week periods ended Jan. 24 were 34 per cent larger than the comparable 1941 periods, whereas in the preceding week there was a gain of 45 per cent.) Retailers’ report indicated,” Dun & Bradstreet said, “that the stockup buying movement, although somewhat diminished from the peak of a week ago, had not yet spent its force. “Multiple purchasing still accounted for an abnormal volume of sales in articles which consumers had singled out as being subject to shortages in the future, quality changes, or price increases. “Retailers who tended to regard the trend as not only abnormal but unhealthy had suspended promotional activity on many items and in others had instituted informal rationing schemes.

Fertilizer shares met support. International Mining & Chemicals preferred moved up a point to 5315, Railroad equipments also met demand, Lima Locomotive and Pullman reaching new 1942 tops on narrow gains. Coca Cola dropped a point but Pepsi-Cola held unchanged. A few specialties like Twin City Rapid Transit preferred, Van Raalt, and the Pacific Coast preferred issues scored gains of a point or more. J. I. Case and Vick Chemical were among issues down a point or more. Union Pacific reached a new high on a small gain. Fractional gains predominated elsewhere in the main stock list.

LOCAL ISSUES

Nominal quotations furnished by local unit of National Association of Securities Dealers.

There are a few theless, which still profit from their business. Yesterday, for instance, Merill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane reported an average profit of 75 cents on each transaction made during 1941. That admittedly modest average came to a respectable total—$459,258—because of the huge volume of business which this house, the largest of its kind in the world, did during 1041.
