We, the Women

A Helpful Creed During War Time By RUTH MILLETT HERE IS A CREED for every woman, be she housewife or career girl. My country is at war—so it needs me. It needs every bit of help I can give. So I will: Take on some kind of voluntary defense work. Work harder at whatever job I hold down, whether it is the kind of job that brings in a pay check or is running a household. Write to at least one young man who is in the armed forces. Go to fewer bridge parties. Learn the fundamentals of nursing. Walk whenever: is not too long. Think longer t..an I used to before making a purchase. Put my savings, however small, into defense bonds. Cut my entertaining down to having friends in for simple meals followed by an evening of conversation or cards. Read with deeper interest the front pages of my newspaper.

Fill Meringue Shells With ‘Pineapple

MERINGUE SHELLS

(Makes 8) 4 egg whites Few grains salt 13 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 cup sifted granulated sugar 1{ teaspoon vanilla extract 1; teaspoon almond extract Beat egg whites until frothy, then add salt and cream of tartar and beat until stiff but not dry. Add sugar a little at a time and beat until the mixture is glossy and holds its shape. Fold in vanilla and almond extracts. Cover a cookie sheet with heavy brown paper. Shape the meringues with a spoon into 3-inch rounds, or press the mixture through a pastry bag or tube. Bake in a very slow oven (250 degrees F.) for 13¢ hours.

PINEAPPLE MERINGUE FILLING

8 slices canned pineapple (No. 2 or 20-ounce can) 3{ cup sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 2 cups liquid (syrup drained from pineapple and water) 4 egg volks, beaten 1 tablespoon lemon juice Drain pineapple thoroughly. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan, then add liquid. Stir until dissolved; cook over direct heat until the mixture thickens then continue cooking until it becomes clear and transparent. Add a portion of the hot mixture slowly to the beaten egg yolks, stirring constantly. Combine the two mixtures and cook for about 2 minutes longer. Stir in lemon juice, and set aside to cool. Use to fill meringue shells and top each with a slice of pineapple.

= = ECONOMIZE in many painless ways. Accept philosophically any sacrifices I have to make of commodities the service men need. Think quite a while before throwing anything away. Spend more time reading informative articles. Be even more annoyed than usual by silly women. Look with scorn on the man or woman who crabs about his lot. Wish whenever I read of some villainous act of our enemies that I were a man—with a gun.

CRASH FATAL TO HOOSIER

AURORA, Ind. Feb. 2 (U, P.) = Edward Swift Sr. 56, died today of injuries received yesterday in an

auto accident on Road 56 near here,

DEAR JANE JORDAN-—I have been going with a boy off and on for three years. He is 19 and I am 16. I love him very much and he says he loves me but he is the kind of person who likes to tell his troubles and wants me to take] pity on him. He doesn't talk about | anything but his troubles any more and most girls do not like for boys to talk about their sorrows. I lose all my affection for him when he starts to tell about his sorrows. He doesn’t live at home for he| has a stepfather who made my| boy friend and his older brother leave. He has a sweet mother and a good job and I can't see why he! has so many sorrows. He even says| he wishes he was dead or would] get killed and I can hardly stand it, but I just laugh at him instead | of taking pity on him. He is mad at me now because I laughed at him instead of taking pity on him. I can have lots of fun with him at times, but at other times I would| just as soon be by myself. He is| losing other friends, too, because of his constant talking as he does. Should I pity him as he wants me to or drop him entirely and go with someone else if he doesn’t change his ways? Please give me some reasons that might cause him to be like this. BUTCH.
