'Fifth Column.’

“All Through the Night” contributes at least something new (if nothing else), is a word. fifth columnists, they may ferred to now as “fivers.” That's what Humphrey Bogart calls them in the Circles current movie. ! ‘Bojo,” he says, or something like | it, “I just run into a nest of them | ‘fivers” Round up some of the boys | and let's go get ‘em’ And the boys get rounded up and| they get the Gestapo, fifth column- | ists or "fivers,” or whatever you wish. The getting involves long] and active sequences of shooting. | fighting, plotting and keeping a| speedboat loaded with high blow-| ups from running into a U. S. bat: leship. | It's a New Twist It's the Broadway wisenheimers| against the Hitler thugs. A new| twist, you must admit. | Mr. Bogart is a reformed gang- | ster—he only gambles and promotes | now—and his favorite cheese cake| maker gets bumped off by the “fiv-| ers” (Now he's got us saying it) | Being curious as to who would do that to his friend, he uncovers the} spy ring. Conrad Veidt is the as-| sistant feuhrer. Kaaren Verne has them, or they'll tort in Germany. oniv he’s already dead. a fact which they overlook telling her. From past experience, Mr. Bogart knows how te handle his nerves snd a gun, and by cunning bravery, supported by his “rod,” he puts the “fivers” smack into the hands of the law. Assistant Feuhrer Veidt gets blown up on that aforementioned | explosive-loaded speedboat. i Plenty of Double-Talk The story has its share of action, which comes in spurts just as the thing is about to bog down. When the boys are not shooting. they're talking the wise double-talk that Damon Runyon writes about. | Evidently the script writers, Leon- | ard Spigeigass and Leonard Qf Ross, are acquainted with one or two of the Runyon characters. At/ least, they produce a reasonable facsimile thereof. Put Runyon's name on the credit lines and every-| thing would be complete. I doubt, though, that he would ever have written a cornev ending! like the one the script writers used It limps —F. P.

‘Bahama Passage’ Is Great Gallery in Motion.

Madeleine Carroll in a sun tan is a sight that one looks at—and then snaps his neck in the next second trying to see if that's what he really saw. For the ladies Stirling Hayden gets the same optical reaction, for he is handsome and wears the same garb as Madeleine. Both are very striking to the eye, and it is the things that catch the eve—not the ear—that distinguish “Bahama Passage.” The movie is playing now at the Indiana. Filmed in technicolor, the show is a good art gallery in motion, depicting the beauty of the Bahamas and more particularly some beautiful people who live in them. Those in a co-operative frame of mind may be able to get the feel of pleasant isolation and general cleanliness reportedly found in tropical islands untouched by the tourist trade and soft drink signs.

Eugenia Nixon, Wabash, Ind. pianist, will be soloist’ with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at its third “pop” concert of the season at 3 p. m. tomorrow in the Murat. She will play the SaintSaens G Minor Concerto.

“Bahama Passage,” however, is not billed as a travel film (though it would make a good one) and so there has to be a story. Putting it in one sentence of short words. it tells how Madeleine and Stirling fall in love despite his neurotic mother and her mean father. That's ‘about all there is, except perhaps |for a few natives (250 the script |says) and some salt ponds.

“BLITHE SPIRIT,” A LITTLE MATTER WHICH Noel Coward ripped off in six days, opens next Monday night at English’s, and so now is the time to tell the story of John C. Wilson. He is the producer of the show and how he became one is a matter rather typical of the airy way in which Noel Coward operates.

The story starts one night some years ago when Mr. Coward was starring in the London production of his play, “The Vortex,” Having watched the performance several times, Mr. Wilson went backstage to meet the star. Next year Mr. Coward brought the drama to New York and so Mr. Wilson wrote him, inviting him to lunch. It was a lunch at which Mr. Coward never appeared. But it develops that the host was not to be put off. Several nights later he called on Mr. Cow=ard in his dressing-room, demand= ing to know why the invitation was ignored. It then came to light that Mr. Coward also had waited. ”

international star on the stage. It was the last that Wall Street saw of John C. Wilson. That had
