Reckoners’ Sel Seek Higher * Pay for Handling

Heavier Plates.

GARY, Ind, Jan. 31 (U, P)— A spokesman for the Carnegie-Illi-nois Steel Corp. said 700 employees had been “laid off” at the Gary plant today and that 1200 more would be sent home during the day because of an alleged “slowdown” in the reckoning department. The company said 80 workers resorted to “delay” practices to enforce a demand for wage gains. Frank Grider, sub-district director for the Steel Workers Organizing Committee, denied the slowdown. Mr. Grider said the controversy dated back two weeks to a request by the crease because the weight of plates| had been increased from 107 to 1351 pounds per base box. He said the company made coun-ter-proposals which “called for very little change™ and was unacceptable,

FEDERATION OPENS TAXI FARE INQUIRY

The Indianapolis Federation of Community Civic Clubs, meeting last night at the Hotel Washington, moved to support the South Side in its effort to eliminate the dump menace. The federation also appointed a committee to investigate the proposed increase in taxicab rates and voted to ask City Council to defer action on an ordinance which would allow the price hike. Committee members include C. H. Strauss, chairman, and Albert Neuerburg and Basil E. Covert. Members also acted favorably on a request of Carl T. Payne, South Side Civic Club member, who asked the federation for help in the fight for track elevation. Paul C. Wetter, federation president, presided over the meeting.
