FIRE BOMB DUD ON RIGHT ROOF

Those of Common Asphalt Have Proved Their Value

In London Raids.

If your home has the modern, fire-resistant type of roof construction, the effectiveness of the fire bomb can easily be combatted.

rain their deathly load over Indianapolis, you'll be thankful that you've taken good care of that shelter over your head. According to a report in the January issue of Architectural Forum, devoted to civilian defense, “far

greater damage can be done by fire than by bombs in congested cities filled with buildings of wood construction.”

Asphalt Roofs Prove Value

Potentially, a two-pound fire bomb can do more damage than explosive bombs weighing 500 times as much. A single plane can carry 2000 or more of the deadly missiles. “Common asphalt roofs have been found to resist the action of burning bombs remarkably well and a number of buildings in London have been covered with solid layers of the material, two or three inches in thickness,” the report said. Because the chief danger lies in the old woodhouse or warehouse, where the bomb may penetrate the roof and set fire to the attic or top floor, it is advisable to remove all combustible materials from these spaces. If possible, sprinkle a layer of sand on the top floor.

Strength of Roof Factor

The report said that the use of asphalt roofing alone does not constitute a bomb stop. This depends greatly on the strength of the supporting roof. But if such precautions are taken to make roofs and houses as fireproof as possible, the danger of conflagration caused by sparks and burning brands carried through the air to inflammable roofs will be greatly lessened. The fire-resistant asphalt roof, whether composed of shingles, roll roofing or built up roofing, is of inestimable value. It is a conflagration stop of proven performance.

and _& Answers

Q—In our new home we wish to have a fireplace in one of the bedrooms on the second floor in addition to a fireplace in the living room. How can this be done at the least expense? A—Every fireplace requires an individual flue and suitable foundation. For economy, plan to use the same chimney for both living room and bedroom fireplaces. Both flues can then be built in the same chimney, and one chimney will provide the necessary support for both fireplaces. This will avoid building separate chimneys and foundations. It also will be possible to include the flue for the heating plant in the same chimney by proper location of the heating unit.

Q--I have noticed that sometimes brick walls develop grayish-white spots. What is the reason for this? A—The white discoloration of

| brickwork you have noticed prob-

ably results from efflorescence. Various mineral salts often contained in the brick and materials used in the mortar are dissolved by moisture absorbed by the brickwork. As the moisture evaporates the salts are deposited on the surface of the wall. The areas affected can be cleaned periodically by scrubbing with 5 to 10 per cent solution of muriatic acid and water. The tendency for efflorescence to reoccur will decrease as the salts evaporate.

FIT HOUSE TO TERRAIN Houses being planned for irregular building sites should be designed to take advantage of the roli of the terrain. Half stories and drooped rooms that hug the contours of the site add individuality and charm to the layout.

IT’S EASIER TO RENT MODERN BUILDING

Modernized buildings rent more quickly, according to leading realtors in New York City. Among the improvements that help rent a house are new roofs of colorful, protective asphalt shingles and panels of eye-catching, light-diffus-ing glass blocks. The realtors point out that glass blocks, inaaddition to being attractive, require infrequent cleaning— but when necessary, are easily wiped clean with a damp cloth.
