But when the AAA made its can-| vass of farmers in November and tallied the results, it found they ex-|

to have plenty to send, via lendlease, to warring Allied nations. One reason Indiana farmers werent so enthusiastic about planting more tomatoes this year is that they feel they were “stung” by some of the canning factories last year. Some canners didn't pay farmers

the price recommended by the Gov-!

ernment.

The Government is doing more than “recommending” a price this vear. It tells canners what to pay the farmers—that is, if the canners intend to sell their packed tomatoes to the Government. Another thing is that labor is scarce. Tomatoes rotted in the field in some sections last year for lack of pickers. Tire rationing may make pickers even harder to get this year. There is even talk about asking the schools to open later, so the late crop can be picked.

If a cash basis is used, Form 1040F. “Schedule of Farm In‘come and Expenses,” is required to be filled out and filed in conjunction with Form 1040. Use of 1040F is optional in the case of farmers who report income on the accrual basis. A farmer who reports income on the cash receipts ang disbursements basis (in which no inventories to determine profits are used) must exclude in gross income tax for the taxable year (1) the amount of cash or the value of merchandise or other property received during the taxable year
