52-Year-Old Gen. Hartle Known as ‘Scrappy’ By Army Friends.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (U. P.) — A 52-year-old, square-jawed Marylander known in the Army as “Scrappy,” heads the first American Expeditionary Force sent to Europe since World War I. He is Maj. Gen. Russell P. Hartle. The size of Gen. Hartle's force and its ultimate duties have not been revealed, but the big, broadshouldered officer is plenty aggressive, resourceful and able to handle his job after a quarter of a century of soldiering, his colleagues say. They said they do not know how he acquired the nickname “Scrappy" but that it has clung to him throughout his climb from a first lieutenant—a rank he was given

Times Special EAST LANSING, Mich, Jan. 27. —Glenn Miller, Butler's big center who swings the ball off the backboards, broke the sophomore scoring record for the Bulldogs last night, but his team lost, 40 to 39, in an overtime tilt with Michigan State. Central Leads State Schools
By UNITED PRESS Evansville Central's Bears today
perched on the pinnacle of high school basketball ratings, after staging the final clincher last night to a premeditated, determined, blue-
printed climb that worked out to specifications. The Bears made their decisive ‘step in the process by sinking Horace Mann of Gary, 27-25, in a shoot-the-works contest that only Hoosier teams could have sired. Mark Wakefield and his lads! named their poison from the start. They sighted a chance to grab state honors and took it, scheduling Horace Mann in advance and banking on the cards to set up last night's contest as the playoff for state leadership.
Umpire—
Capt. Andy Zimmer (No. 7) and Ray Antle of Michigan (Neo. 20) Jockey for the rebound as the Hoosiers smothered the Wolverines at Bloomington last night. Zimmer hit for six buckets in six shots and made both his free throws for a perfect evening.
