WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (U. P).
| —The United States, mobilizing as
never before, will spend $48,000.000,000 in 1942 alone and “produce as many tanks and planes as Hitler
I did in all the years before 1939 when |
le was preparing for world conquest,” the Office of Facts and Figures predicted today. The forecast, outlining broad details of the American armament program, was contained in a 82-page “report to the nation” prepared unjer the direction of Director Archi-
bald MacLeish at the request of President Roosevelt. The report stated that Mr. Roosevelt’s victory goal of unprecedented production of planes, tanks, guns fand ships can be achieved, however, jonly Ly “the mobilization of every available man, woman, dollar and |thing—every plant, tool, machine and bit of material.” Unlike the special Senate defense investigation committee which took a pessimistic view of American warplane production, the “report to the

nation” declared that the United States now has “four types of combat planes better than anything yet produced abroad, so far as is Mhown.” Other highlights of the report: 1. New selective service legislation will make possible the mobilization of a 7.000,000-man Army, greatest in United States history. 2. The American Armament industry is potentially the greatest in the world compared with the situation in 1939 when the munitions in-

4. Although actual deliveries of| lend-lease supplies to the United |
Nations—Great Britain, Russia, China, The Netherlands, and others —have only amounted to $600,000,000, “future exports will be gigantic 5. The Navy, engaging the enemy in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, is rapidly becoming a two-ocean
fighting force in action as well as in name. Two thousand new planes
are in the Navy's hands. Being built are 15 battleships, 11 aircraft carriers, 54 cruisers, 193 destroyers and 73 submarines. “No other nation in the world has ever undertaken or could ever undertake such a program,” the report said. “In 1942 alone we will produce nearly three times as many weapons and supplies of war as in all the months since the fall of France.
“More important, we will have the plant capacity to increase our
production to the point where we can seize control of the air in all areas of the world struggle.” On the home front, the report cited an increase of 11 per cent in the total cost of living since September, 1939. More than fourfifths of this increase, it said, has taken place’ in the past nine months and if the trend continues the increase will go to 15 per cent by March.
