Honolulu Doctor Reports Drop in Brain Wound Mortality.

CHICAGO, Jan. 22 (U.P). — A Honolulu physicia®@ who attended the wounded after the Pearl Harbor attack predicted teday that use of sulfonamide drugs would prove an important factor in reduction of brain wound mortality during the war. Dr. Ralph B. Cloward in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said brain operations were postponed as much as 24 to 36 hours because of the yarge number of cases requiring treatment. He said infection was avoided in these cases through proper wound cleansing and application of sulfonamide powder. Dr. Cloward recommended “generous use of sulfanflamide in scalp, skull and brain wounds because it is absorbed into the blood stream more rapidly than other sulfonamide drugs. Dr. Cloward said that brain wound fatalities should be far below the World War I figure of 28 per cent

On two of these contracts the company lost, the committee computing the losses as 9.35 per cent and 288.93 per cent, the latter on a very smali project for which the fee was $1200. On the four other contracts the committee computed the profit as 28.7 per cent, 36.3 per cent. 53.3 per cent and 56 per cent The committee has not received enough data to compute profits or losses of Robert & Co. on the three major projects—at Bermuda, Jacksonville, and Corpus Christi, for which the firm's fees are $592 3830.

Hearing Scheduled

The Naval Affairs Committee has shown such interest in these three projects that it will hold a public hearing to put the details on the record. Mr. Robert, early in the Roosevelt Administration, was assistant secretary of the treasury in charge of public buildings. He left the Treas‘ury after a row with Secretary of the Interior Ickes. Subsequently he became secretary to the Democratic National Committee. He left his political post after criticism of the number of Naval contracts he was receiving.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (U.P)— At ease, you city farmers! Drop | those spading forks. Get away from those seed catalogs. { You want to be patriotic, you want to help beat the Japs, don't vou? Well, take the advice of the Department of " Agriculture—stick | to your petunias, and let the parsnips go unless you've been raising them before. Let tne country's dirt farmers raise the vegetables. They'll do it {better and you won't get so many | stiff joints. Don't get the Department of Agriculture wrong. It's not trying to stifie one of the strongest and noblest urges in the heart of man | just for the fun of it.

Called a Waste

But it remembers the last war when housewives and their husbands, brokers and mechanics, sec'retaries and store clerks went hog | wild with hoes and spades on every plot of idle ground they could find, including parks, golf courses, lawns and baseball diamonds. Tne net result was a great use of seeds, fertilizers, insecticides and | energy which might more effici- | ently have beén used on farms by { experts at gardening. So this time the Department hopes that city folk who aren't used to gardening will let their lawns lie fallow and continue to rely on the corner grocery store for swiss chard, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, onions and spinach. Because food is a weapon in time of war and because they know that the spring madness induced by too) close association with an illustrated | seed catalog can't really be cured, ! {the Department's experts, as one | 'of them put it today, “arent con-| demning anyone who can actually | produce food.” “But,” he added. “this is no time | to waste labor and seed, and we | don't believe the average city lot] and the average city dweller make the most efficient combination for turning them into food.”

Conceivably, if every potential] city farmer should dust off his| tools, grub out his flowers, turn] under his bluegrass and start plant-| ing vegetables, a serious shortage might occur in some seeds. Carrot, onion and beet seeds, for example, are not as abundant as usual! because of crop failures in the West caused by too much rain last year. Certain other seeds, such as cauliflower, are not as plentiful as they! were before imports from Europe were cut off by the war. | The Department estimates roughly that there are at least as many potential city farmers as genuine airt farmers, and last year there were 4.431000 farm gardens in the United States. The Department's aim is to bring the total of farm gardens this year to 5,760,000.

P.). —The Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation of the Department of Commerce today issued regulations requiring that a wider variety of emergency rations be carried in lifeboats and liferats of ships whose routes carry them more than 200 miles offshore at anytime.
