'Toss Away All Facts and Figures and Just Wait Until 9:30 Saturday Night’

By HARRY MORRISON The county basketball championship could very weil be decided in any one of the opening tonight or tomorrow— there are that many tough teams. As Joe Jordan of Central of Lawrence puts it: “No matter who plays in this tournament, just toss away all the facts and figures and wait until Saturday night about 9:30.” On the basis of figures, however, some conclusions can be drawn. Southport, coached by Doyal Plunkitt assisted by Jewell Young, former Purdue ace, has played tougher competition than other county teams and has the highest scoring average, 33.8 per game. Their opponents garnered 398 points in 13 games. All Plunkitt will say is: “We're very small, probably the smailest team in the county. Look at it another way. Warren Central, outside of tournament play. has won 10 and lost no games. And they beat Southport early in the season, 29 to 24. In the New Year's Day tourney at Warren's gym, Warren lost to Central of Lawrence, 38 to 37, and Lawrence then lost to Frank- | lin Township, 38 to 33. | And Franklin Township has won 7 and lost 6. But remember that Bob Windhorst, Franklins 6 foot 3 inch center, was out of four games that they lost. Fred Keesling, coach at the new Lawrence, has put a good team on the floor, made up of veterans from the three schools that make up the new institution —old Lawrence, Oaklandon and Castleton. They may be the tourney dark horse. Decatur Central is last year’s champion. They have a 9 to 3 won and lost record so far this year and they've beaten every county team they've played—Ben Davis, Beech Grove, Franklin Township and Speedway. Decatur tock the Dope Box, that tackle container that all the county teams vie for, from Ben Davis early in the season and they still have it. Coach Burke Anderson, who has confidence galore, says it will be a scramble all the way through, but that Decatur “naturally” expects to win.” He adds, however, that Decatur won't win unless they play better than at any time in the sea-

son. He says his boys haven't plaved well enough to win, but that they expect to be an improved ball club starting tonight. Ralph Johnson's boys at Speedway haven't been going too good this vear. They've won only three games while losing nine but (here we go again) they beat Franklin Township by five points. Johnson

they have an outside chance in

“We have no particular brand of ball,” he says. “We try to set up a lot of shots and hope a few will go in. We aren't the favorite—so far, we've been lucky.” Beech Grove, with a six and six record, goes into the tourney handicapped by the loss of Paul Bailey, senior forward, who has a back injury. They've lost to all the County teams they've played, except Speedway. And they beat Speedway, conqueror of Franklin Township, just the other night.
