Your Income Tax

Income taxes for 1941 are paid on normal tax net incomes and on surtax net incomes. A study of the instructions that accompany the

compute the tax on such incomes. This brief statement should serve to help to that end.

The Internal Revenue Code, as mal tax rate, and that is 4 per cent.

come—that is, the net income less the sum of (1) allowable personal exemption and credits for dependents, (2) the interest on obligations of the United States and its instrumentalities, and (3) an earned income credit of 10 per cent of the amount of the earned net income but not in excess of 10 per cent of the amount of the net income. If the net income is $3000, no more than $300 earned net income credit would be deductible from the net income. The entiré amount of the taxpayer's net income up to and including $3000. regardless of the source, is considered earned net income. The surtax is imposed upon the entire amount of surtax nét income. In the computation of the surtax net income the only credits allowable against net income are the personal exemption and the credit for dependents. The rates of surtax increase as the amount of the surtax net income increases, For instance, if the surtax net income is not over $2000. the surtax is 6 per cent of the|T surtax net income. The surtax upon a surtax net income of $2000 is $120; upon a surtax net income in excess of $2000 and not in excess of $4000, $120 plus 9 per cent of the excess over $2000; upon a surtax net income of $4000, $300; upon a surtax net income in excess of $4000 and not in excess of $6000, $300 plus 13 per cent of the excess over $4000; upon a surtax net income of $6000, $560; and upon a surtax net income in excess of $6000 and not in excess of $8000, $560 plus 17 per cent of the excess over $6000. Thus the rates are increased from 6 per cent on the first $2000 to 77 per cent on the excess of surtax net income over $5,000,000. The maximum surtax rate is 77 per cent. On a surtax net income of $5,000,000, the surtax is $3,723,780. When the surtax net income exceeds| $5,000,000, the 77 per cent rate is applicable to such excess, in addition to the surtax of $3,723,780.
