Don Johnson, Bowes bowler who led the singles in the 1939 ABC, topped the team last night with a dazzling 769. His first game was 286. He followed with a 244 and a 239. Others on the winning five were Larry Fox, with 708; John Fehr, with 705: Fonnie Snyder, with 700, and Walter Heckman, with 571. Heckman started slowly, but came through in the last game with a 204. In besting the season single game mark, the Blue Ribbons also beat the Bowes best single game of 1191, made last night. The previous record was 1177, held by Falls City, Bowes opponents last night. Blue Ribbon bowlers who made the new record were Joe Argus, 235; Ralph Richman, 232; Charles Cray, 257; Bert Bruder, 245, and Joe Michaelis, 223. lls City had held the previous gaeson three-game high, with 32786. They beat their own record by bowling 3282 last night, but lost ail three games to the Bowes quintet. Joe Fulton led the Falls City five, with games of 223. 237 and a final 279 for a total of 739. CORAL GABLES, Fla, Jan. 15 (U. P.).—Top seeded Wayne Sabin from Portland, Ore, led a field of the nation’s outstanding amateurs into the third round of the University or Miami Invitation Tennis Tournament today. Billy Gillespie of Miami and Jack Kramer of Oakland, Cal, kept pace with Sabin as the threesome stroked down opponents in early rounds. Gillespie eliminated Hernando Molino of Havana, third-seeded foreign entrant, 9-7, 7-5, in a hardfought battle. Sabin advanced easily with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Malcolm McAllister of Miami and was ready to meet Gillespie today. Kramer defeated William Culley 6-0, 6-2, in a first round

Fear Reds. 1 Not Cards, Says ‘Lip’
NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (U.P) — Manager Leo Durocher of the Dodg- | ers caused some surprise among | Metropolitan “hot-stovers” today by declaring that Cincinnati, and not St. Louis, would be the club that the Dodgers must beat for the Na-| tional League pennant this season.| Durocher showed an unexpected | lack of respect for the Cards. He| that Mort Cooper is al great pitcher, but doubted that last vear’s promising rookies, Dan White and Howard Pollett, would do as) well as expected. Moreover, hel claimed the Cards will feel the loss of Johnny Mize, now with the Giants.

Canada Keeps Sports Going
MONTREAL, Jan. 15 (U. P)— Canada is surprised that the United States Golf Association should cancel all major tournaments in 1942. This surprise is matural because Canada has been at war for two and a half years, yet—almost without exception—the governing bodies of various Canadian sports have declared their intentions recently of carrying on full programs this year. : The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association reaffirmed its plan to keep its sport functioning full blast, and the Royal Canadian Golf Association announced that the Canadian Open will be staged as usual. Neither Toronto nor Montreal show any intention of giving up their International League baseball teams, although they may be forced to later if the draft catches too many of their United States players. This leaves only one major sport still doubtful—football. But the pigskin enthusiasts insist that the Eastern Rugby-Football Union will carry on next autaumn. In the West, however, there is little chance that the Western Football Conference will resume operations. Distances are too great, enlistments too heavy and crowds too small to warrant continuation of the Vancouver-Regina-Winnipeg circuit. Intercollegiate sports, never overly important in the Dominion, have folded considerably because of the war and other reasons, but Cana-

HAWAII CASUALTIES PINING FOR ACTION =:
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 15 (U. P.) —Sailors injured in the attack on Pearl Harbor are anxious to get back into action against the Japanese. Many already have returned to duty. Newspapermen were permitted to interview the casualties at a naval hospital for the first time yesterday and found some men, borne ashore only a few weeks ago as stretcher cases, almost completely recovered. None has died. J. W. Beard, Portland, Ind., aviation machinist’s mate, second class, was visiting with his wife when newspapermen arrived. He was in the naval hospital at Honolulu at the time of the Japanese attack recovering from injuries received earlier. A cable on an aircraft carrier had broken loose and cut off his leg below the knee. “I knew what was going on while I lay in the hospital,” said Beard. “I could hear plenty of noise—fir- [MID ing and shooting and the sound of glass splintering. I sure wanted to get out of there and at em.” “He wanted to get out his shot gun and go to work,” interjected Mrs. Beard with a smile. ee ——
