A POLICEMAN beat the firemen to a fire at 4846 English Ave. today. The officer was Sergt. Kent Yoh. His house was on fire. A call from his wife, telling about the fire, came to Police Headquarters just as he arrived for duty with the Emergency Squad. Sergt. Yoh decided that Emergency No. 1 was at his home. The blaze, confined to the furnace room, caused smoke which spread a coat of soot over furniture and draperies.
GOUNTY DEBT CUT $1,124,000 IN "41
The County government's bonded debt was reduced $1,124,000 during 1941, records in County Auditor Glenn B. Ralston’s office showed today. The bonded debt on Jan. 1 was $5,651,00 compared to $6,770,000 a year ago. Most of the remaining outstanding bonds were issued during the early depression years for township poor relief when that expense went far beyond current budgets. Two years ago, County officials at the insistence of Fabian W. Biemer, Deputy Auditor, embarked upon a pay-as-you-go basis in poor relief financing, greatly reducing the bonded debt this year. If no new bonds are issued, the

Dobbie Diets His Way to Air Corps
HAMILTON FIELD, Cal. Jan. 14 (U. P.).—Donald Dobbie, Berkeley, is in the Army Air Corps after reducing his weight in 10 days in a determined effort to qualify for service. The 25-year-old accountant was accepted by Hamilton Field authorities yesterday and was instructed to report Feb. 12 at one of the Army basic training schools in California. Dobbie said the scales at his home registered his weight at 189 pounds, one pound under the Army maximum. Ten days ago, when he applied for enlistment, Dobbie weighed 214 pounds. Told he was too heavy, he began an immediate campaign to reduce his weight by diet and exercise. Mrs. Dobbie signed an affidavit saying she was capable of earning her own living.

Hawkins Family Takes the Mumps
ARKANSAS CITY, Kas, Jan, 13 (U. P.).—The five Hawkins children went back to school today but the “mumps” sign still was out at the Hawkins residence. The father, Cecil Hawkins, brought them home and when he went to bed one after another of his children followed suit. Then the family spaniel, Peggy Pepper, got ’em. Fortunately, the affliction spared Mrs. Hawkins, who carried on her husband’s bottling works business while caring for seven patients. Mr. Hawkins and the spaniel still were convalescing today.
