The champion was dressed in a tan] plaid suit, brown overcoat. : The photographers tried to get Joe! to smile for them but he couldn® make it. “Gee, this seems like the middle the night,” the champion said. Black laughed at Joe's remark and said that when Louis was dressing he had said, “Julian, this getting up so early is going to be the toughest thing about fighting this war.”|

Joe Turner Has Only 12 Saves As Phillies’ Rockets Fall

Hockey defensemen get their names in the paper about as often as football guards but Messrs. Whitelaw, Jackson, Ross, Behling and McCaig of the Indianapolis Capitals cannot be denied today. Why the Philadelphia Rockets could hardly get within yelling dis-

| tance of Goalie (No Ne!) Joe Turner last night.

| The Caps kept their Philly slate {4 of the season, 5 to 1. And Turner {was only attacked 12 times all | evening. ; Manager Herbie Lewis came up’

with three new lines which rocked | Cleve

the Rocket goalie from side to side Buns

all evening while the Philly wings were crushed before they started up the ice. Seldom, if ever, has one team go {completely dominated the Coliseum {ice. Thirteen minutes passed in the {second period before they even al‘lowed the Rockets a shot at Turner. New Lines Work Herbie was beaming like a 12-year-old at his first birthday party. “It is those new lines that did it,” he said, “we are ready to go East now.” The Caps’ destiny lies in the East. It is a heavy duty trip with Providence, New Haven and Hershey on the list. Next Sunday the Washington Lions come here for their second local showing. The boys in blue still have to look up to find Hershey and Cleve- | land in the standings. But the caliber of hockey they displayed last night will carry them a long way. At the present rate of improvement Roy Sawyer should be a goal-a-minute man by next Sunday. The reshuffle of the lines, of which Lewis is so proud, brings; together Hee Kilrea, Connie Brown and Joe Fisher; Jerry Brown, Jud McAtee and Bill Jennings, and Roy Sawyer, Les Douglas and Jack Keating. All three scored last night. The 4117 who paid saw the lowly Philadelphia wings and defensemen socked and checked enough to give them only three close ups of Turner during the entire first period. Fast Skating The pace was hot during the first frame but Perras held well until the closing minutes. Then the Sawyer-Douglas-Keating line stuck twice in a big hurry. The trio hit the blue line together and Douglas handed Keating a side shot Svhich he bounced off the pipes to the inside at 18:48. Fifteen seconds later they loomed up before the harried Perras again. This time it was Sawyer on a rebound while the other two rode Perras out of the net. The second period was another two-goaler with Jud McAtee and Bob Whitelaw applying the finishing touches. Jud, working with Bill Jennings and Jerry Brown, spun around and fired a backward shot which rode right over Perras’ shoulder at 4:03. Defense Whitelaw gained a break with Douglas and was handed a sweet pass on the left from where he easily railed a high one passed Perras for No. 4 at 10:07. The final frame started with a penalty on Frank Daley out of Philly. The Caps went to work on the remaining five immediately. Jennings brought the rubher down on the side and fired a well-timed pass to Fisher breaking right in front. It was the goal of the evening, perfectly planned and perfectly executed. Time—2:02. The Philly tally came at 15:06. Charlie Mason got off a pass from the blue line which Ossie Asmundsen nipped in while the snarl of] players shielded the puck from Joe. (B. F)

Girl Bowlers Beat Chicagos

Paced by Bertha Urbancic of the White Rocks, the picked team of Indianapolis women bowlers yesterday made it “all-even” in two match series with the Rovick women’s quintet from Chicago, The matches were held at Sturm’s and net proceeds from it and the one Saturday at the Sport Bowl between another team of Indianapolis girls and the Rovick team|— went for the fight against infantile paralysis. Miss Urbancic rolled a 601 to top both teams. Scores for the local

team were 901, 922 and 942. The visitors rolled 812, 819 and 883. The result of the match was never in doubt as the Indianapolis team turned on the heat from the beginning. Gertrude Bradley gave the crowd its biggest thrill by starting her second game with six consecutive strikes. A Brooklyn on her seventh ball broke the string, but she went on to roll a 245, highest single game

of the match. have more hand. Ta Tax
