New Power Line From Indiana Is Planned to Aid Southeast

By ROGER BUDROW

SOUTHEASTERN U. S. CAN USE INDIANA POWER in large quantities when a new power line, now being planned,

is built.

This connection will go from Terre Haute to Louisville. Through various interconnections the Southeast will draw upon the power plants of Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Day-

ton as well. The reverse situation is a pos-| sibility if more war plants are lo-| cated in the Midwest. This area | could draw on| the TVA for power, if it has a surplus. Last summer there was a drought in the Southeast, lowering power production. Public Service Co. of Indiana had to send power to the TVA by a long roundRoger Budrow .,,,uyt route from Terre Haute to Ft. Wayne, down through Ohio and West Virginia. There already is a 66,000 kilowatt line from Terre Haute to Louisville. But a heavier lin is wanted. Furthermore, the present line meanders from Terre Haute down to near Vincennes, then east to Bedford and Scottsburg before going | down to Louisville. The new line, 132,000 kilowatts, would go from Terre Haute to Bedford to Louisville and cost $1,140,000. | The main substation at Bedford will | cost another $425,000 and the connection at the Terre Haute Dresser power plant will add $100,000 more. |

Later, about $250,000 will have tol 3

be sp~nt for more equipment at the] New Albany co ville, All this entails much co-opera-| tion among several private utilities | and greatly strengthens their in-| terconnections, which is just what| the Federal Power Commission] wants. The utility getting rights

expects less difficulty

in from farmers to|

permit the power lines to cross their| yr.qium ana

property than was the case in build- | ing the now nearly completed line] from Terre Haute to Lafayette,|

needed for the aluminum plant]

Your Income Tax

Twenty-two million persons, firms, and corporations. it is estimated. will probably file income-tax returns this year. These returns begin to trickle in around Jan. 1. Every return for

the calendar year 1941 must be in by midnight of March 16. In order| to handle the enormous volume of | work alone entailed of receiving these returns, the Bureau of Inter-| nal Revenue has greatly its staff in its several district offices. | The experience of former years shows that the Bureau is always swamped with iate returns. If taxpayers will file their returns early, they will find that this will be] mutually beneficial to the Government. A large number of these returns! contain errors which, if not cor-| rected by the audit, would result to the disadvantage of the taxpayer.| Many persons pay in more than the amount of the tax due; others fail] to take advantage of the personal | exemption, the credit allowed for] dependents, or deductions from gross income to which they are en- | titled.

Tire Rationing Boosts Bus Shares Higher; Trade

Is Quiet.

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (U. P)— American Telephone led the stock market irregularly lower today on a loss of almost 5 points. Trading was quiet.

Telephone met pressure after opening on a loss of almost a point and sold down to 12614, off 43% points net. Substantial losses also occurred in a few other issues, including Coca Cola at 73, off 3 and a new low; Jewel Tea 50, off 2 and a new low; Columbia Gas preferred 51, off 2; Sears Roebuck 533%, off 2; Westinghouse Electric 78, off 13; American Can 60%, off 1%; Du Pont 137%, off 11; Montgomery Ward 26%, off 1; Union Carbide 78, off 13%; and Bristol Myers 40%, off 1%. Bus shares met special buying on the theory that rationing of tires will bring them heavier passenger traffic. Omnibus preferred led the group up with a 6-point gain to 76. New York City Omnibus rose 13% to 141%.

Transport, United Dyewood and Market Street Railway prior proferred which were up a point or more. General Gas convertible preferred jumped 6 to 98. Dealings were dominated by the war-time outlook for the various companies, particularly from the standpoint of vulnerability to taxes.

TRUCK FIRM CITED FOR OVERLOADING

The Steel Transportation Co. of Indiana Harbor has been placed on probation for a 90-day period by the Public Service Commission for truck overloading. This is the first action taken by

»| the Schricker-appointed P. 8. C.

in its announced program to ‘crack down” on truck operators who overload their vehicles by revocation of their operating certificates. Commission officials said that the

cause the company was engaged in hauling steel which is vital to the

3 [country’s defense.

In the probation order, the P. S. C. stated that the transportation

+ | company admitted hauling four

gross loads of from 69,000 to 73,000 Novem8 per (the legal limit is approximately 52,000 pounds). But no overloading occurred after the company was cited to show cause why their

1 2 operating certificate should not be

revoked, officials said. The possibility of having operating certificates revoked for over-

¢| loading is believed by States offiA cials to be more likely to cause

truck operators to keep their vehicles within the legal limits than court fines—the penalties used previously. State Highway Commission offi-

,|cials say that truck overloading is

the chief cause for the break-up of highway pavement in many sections

Indiana.

MOLYBDENUM T0 THE RESCUE

Taking Place of Tungsten, Chromium and Nickel In War Effort.

By ROSCOE FLEMING Times Staff Writer DENVER, Jan. 8—With the com= pletion next. May of a new mill unit now being built at its huge mine on the Continental Divide, to increase milling capacity by 2000 tons of ore daily, the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Colorado will be in a position to turn out $37,000,000 pounds of “moly” a year. Because it is comparatively plen= tiful in the U. S.,, molybdenum

5| through new processes is taking the

place of the scarcer tungsten, chro=mium and nickel—or is being com=bined with them — to make hard

.| steel for scores of war uses.

Climax production is now 71 per cent of the estimated U. S. moly

3| output of 45,000,000 pounds yearly.

This does not mean that 1941 saw a total of 45,000,000 pounds, because production was less in early

1511041.

In 1942, however, the output may reach 50,000,000 pounds or more. Next to Climax in production is the copper-mine of the Utah Copper Co. at Bingham. Molybdenum is also coming from other copper properties, and is being produced along with tungsten at Bishop, Cal, and with lead at Mammoth, Ariz. The largest producer of molybdenum outside the U. S. is the Green Cannaea copper mine in Mexico, now yielding about 1,500,000 pounds yearly. The next largest producer—and the only large one in Axis-held territory—is the Knaben mine in Norway, which puts out about a million pounds a year,
