CONGRESS CHIEFS RETAIN OPTIMISM

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (U. P)— Congressional leaders took the view today that the fall of Manila is only “temporary” and that ultimately the United States will retake the Philippines. Senate Democratic Leader Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky recalled he had warmed that there was no expectation that Manila could be held. “I am sure that all Americans appreciate the heroic fight made by the American and Philippine forces to hold Manila and the rest of the Philippines, “This reverse need not discourage the American people.”

Daring Britishers Strike af Narvik

LONDON, Jan. 2 (U., P.) —Britain’s commandos, raiders and coun-ter-invasion troops, have struck successfully again at German ocpation troops in Norwegian territory in a daring hii-run raid on the Lofoten Islands, the Admiralty said yesterday. “Following up a raid on Vaagsoe Island, off the west coast of Norway, Saturday, it was said, the commandos carried out operations off Narvik which lasted several days, resulted in the sinking of a German patrol boat, the capture of “some” prisoners and the disruption of enemy sea communications in the area.

MISS INGALLS ASKS ‘NO DEFENSE’ PLEA

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (U. P.).— Laura Ingalls, noted woman flier, notified U. S. District Judge James Morris through her attorneys today that she would like to enter a plea

of nolo contendere, or no defense, to an indictment charging her with failure to register as a German agent. Judge Morris, with whom her counsel and Government prosecutors conferred, gave each side a week in which to present memoranda on whether he should consider taking such a plea. The effect of this legal action is that the court can act without a jury trial. She is at present free on $7500 bond.

WHY OF DRUNKS

Alcohol Slows Processes Until Coma Is Induced; "Find Sulfa Secret.

DALLAS, Tex, Jan. 2 (U. P.).— Luciferin, the stuff that makes lightning bugs light, has revealed to science why drunks get that way and has contributed to the most important medical discovery of 1941. A trio of scientists used luciferase, the enzyme of luciferin, to conduct a complicated series of experiments and overturn the previous notions of how alcohol and anaesthetics work on human beings. For. their efforts they won last night the $1000 prize offered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the most notable contribtuion to scientific learning for the year. Learn How Sulfa Works

They are Doctors Douglas A. Marshiland and D. E. S. Brown of New York University and Dr. Frank H. Johnson of Princeton University. They determined that alcohol and anaesthetics slow down the body processes until a coma is induced. Previously science had theorized that anaesthetics dissolved fatty insulation around nerve centers, short-ecircuiting them and causing unconsciousness. Important, too, was the byproduct of their experiments — an explanation of how the new, powerful, life-saving sulfa drugs stay disease, The scientists suspended luminous bacteria—bacteria containing luciferase—in water. Then they added, in -various experiments, alcohol, ether, sulfanilimide. and other drugs. They changed the temperature and the pressure on the water. Then, because the bacteria was selflighted, they could watch the changes that came over it.

Disperse Molecules

The alcohol, ether, sulfanilimide and drugs dispersed the molecules of bacteria until they gave off only a tiny portion of their normal light. Too much alcohol and too much of the other anaesthetic drugs blacked out the light altogether. When they applied heat to the water, or pressure by means of a pump, the molecules came back together and the luciferase glowed as brightly as before. The luminous bacteria paralleled the enzymes of the body, the complex organic substances such as pepsin which help humans digest their food and carry on other such internal chemical operations.

Body Functions Cease

So, the scientists concluded, application of alcohol, ether, sulfanilimide and other drugs and anaesthetics to the enzymes of the body cause them to disperse and split into tiny, inoperative molecules. Without the help of the enzymes important body functions cease or are slowed materially. As they decelerate, the patient slowly approaches complete coma — hence, presumably, the stages of intoxication leading eventually to the “pass out.” Suilfanilimide, it was deduced, thus acts on bacteria, dispersing it and staking its evil work until the human body can lick it with its own weapons.

SENATE GROUP GETS PRICE CONTROL BILL

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (U. P).— A Senate banking subcommittee today approved the comprehensive price control measure, with a provision that ceilings on tarm commodities cannot be set at less than 110 per cent of parity or the price level of Oct. 1, 1941. The full committee will consider the measure at 2 p. m. today. Senator Prentiss Brown (D. Mich), chairman of the subcommittee, said he hoped to bring the House-ap-proved measure to the Senate floor by next Tuesday.
