8 PER GENT GAIN IN CARLOADINGS SEEN

WASHINGTON, Jan, 2 (U, P).— The Association of American Railroads today predicted that carloadings for the first quarter of 1042) will top the 1941 period by 8.1 per cent,

On the basis of estimates by the : 113 Shippers’ Advisory Boards, the A. A. R. forecast that freight-car loadings of 28 principal commodities in the first three months of A 1942 will total 6,054,328 cars, compared with 5601422 in the corresponding 1941 period. "re All of the Shippers’ Advisory » Boards predicted increased carloadings in their territories, estimated , gains ranging from 2.1 per cent in . {the Ohio Valley region to 21.1 per cent in the Northwest territory. The A. A. R. pointed out that “normally” the commodities used in the estimates number 29, “but owing to the uncertainty of the aui [tomobile industry, pending an an- " nouncement by the Office of Pro-| duction Management as to production in February and March,” no estimate could be made for the first quarter as to automobile, truck and parts shipments, The great Lakes Shippers’ Adi sory Board estimated that, in that region where more automobiles are produced than in any other, carloadings of assembled vehicles in January will total only 7612 against 24.322 a year ago. For the month of January, in the country as a whole, loadings of assembled. automobiles and trucks were forecast at only 15681 freight cars, against 50,513 in January, 1043.

INDIANA'S PIG CROP LARGEST ON RECORD

LAFAYETTE, Jan. 2 (U, P). — Hoosier farmers have the largest fall pig crop on record-—an estimated 3,204,000 head for 1941—according to a report issued today by the Purdue University Agricultural statistics department. The survey revealed farmers have

\ h h Chicago, Fast Alton, Ill, and 3 Cleveland. In addition Bridgeport Brass is building a large unit for the Navy at Bridgeport, Conn, which will be in at least partial operation in April or May. Cartridge brass is an alloy consisting of 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Copper, of course, is one of the most precious of all metals now. Certain type bombers, for instance, require more than two miles of copper wire alone in addition to many copper and copper alloy parts. Some bombers use as much as 500 pounds of copper and its alleys. And an average battleship uses around 2,000,000 pounds of the red metal. Thus it’s no wonder that copper is under the strictest sort of priorities.
