WAR AFFECTS SALES LEVIES

Reduction in Auto Output And Tires Likely to Decrease Income. By MARSHALL MecNEIL

Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Jan. 1.—War is affecting adversely a whole series of Federal sales taxes, and when Congress writes the new (ax bill this year it doubtless will have to consider ways of making up lost revenue The drastic reductions preduction of automobiles Federal revenus sales on these vehicles, from a similar tax on trucks The strict rationing of tires and tubes will cut revenue from this source. And if these things cause more and more Americans to move about on their feet instead of on} the seat of their pants, both Fed- | eral and State revenues from the gasoline tax will be affected. |

Tax Yielded Billion

In the last fiscal year, the Federal excises on trucks, autos, tires) and tubes, gasoline, lubricating oil] and mechanical refrigerators yield-| ed more tha In the first five months of last year, the yield was $277464320. | But since October, other articles, such as electric, gas and oil appliances, electric signs, business and store machines, washing machines, | photographic apparatus and radios and phonographs—all subject to priorit and possible rationing— have been on the Federal tax rolls.

BRITISH WORK DAY AND NIGHT

That's What a Factory Foreman Writes Tool Co. Employee Here.

This is how hard British workmen are going at it to win the war, according to a letter from a British factory foreman to his correspondent in Indianapolis: «I must say that even this week, some of my men have worked from Monday, all night and all day Tuesday untii 10 p. m. to get repairs done on vital machines.” M. J. Middleton, 1242 Burdsal Parkway, an employee of the International Machine Tool Co. here, received the letter from H. Lowe, factory maintenance foreman at Peterborough, England. «Some of the men volunteered ‘and I felt very proud of them,” Mr. Lowe wrote. “Work is so important that not a machine stands idle. We have such big commitments here and overseas that we must work, work and work.” The correspondence between the American and the Briton grew up after Mr. Middleton wrote his name and address on a lathe shipped to England last spring on the chance someone would reply. Mr. Lowe and his wife both did.

Plans for the nation-wide development of junior aviation through a consolidation of two main groups have been announced by Winthrop Rockefeller, chairman of Air Youth of America, and Gill Robb Wilson, National Aeronautic Association president. Air Youth of America will become a division of the National Aeronautic Association with headquarters in Washington. The N. A. A. Academy of Model Aeronautics will continue as a part of the air youth division. It will function in the {new setup substantially as at pres- | ent, furnishing technical guidance | and setting rules for model airplane contests and meets. A group of prominent aviation and youth leaders will supervise the combined activity. “Youth training in aviation,” Mr. Rockefeller declared, “will build American air supremacy not only for war but for peace and will play an important part in preparing the young people of this country for the rapid technical changes which will follow the present conflict.

“Already this is paying big divi-

ands of young men who developed their interest and skill in aviation through airplane model building; are now serving as military pilots and aircraft workers. Thousands more are in the aviation schools. “Germany and Italy built s broad base for their air power through mass youth movements. America has done as much through volunteer groups in model building now numbering more than 2,000,000 enthusiasts who buy 20,000,000 model kits a year.”

Local Sales Boom

Indianapolis in the past two months has done its share in purchasing some of the 20,000,000 model kits that Mr. Rockefeller speaks of.

Dates for this annual aeronautical classic will be announced later. This will be the third consecutive year in 14 years that Chicago has had the nationals. Plans are being made to make this a “bigger and better” meet than any in the past. The attendance in 1940 was 125,000, and in 1941 the contest drew only 85,000 spectators due to the draft and national emergencies.

Progress in Tennessee

A friend writes us that this week the Tennessee Bureau of Aeronautics hopes to begin its program of model airplane building and aviation ground instruction in the fifth and 10th grades of both rural and city schools. The books which boys and girls will study were edited by Mervin Rosenbush, aviation editor of The Press-Scimitar, who has conducted the Junior Aviation program in the Midsouth and assisted in the staging of the National Junior Air Races at Cleveland, Akron and Buffalo,

One of the books, “Facts on Aviation for the Future Fliers of Tennessee,” has just come off the presses. About 30,000 copies will be dis tributed free to the schools of the state by the Bureau of Aeronautics which receives its funds from a gas tax on fuel used for aviation pure poses in Tennessee, Maybe some day Indiana will see the same program inaugurated.
