Adaptation Is Superb Work
Scenes In Circle Film Are Impressive
“How Green Was My Valley” playing now at the Circle, deserves words of high praise that haven't grown pale from over-exposure. By every standard—cast, direction, story and production—this contribution by the director, John Ford, is a noble effort. It is beautifully human and a superb adaptation of a novel if ever there was one. It has the power to move the onlooker with scenes he won't soon erase from his memory. It's Great Becausé—
course, but this is a great film. It is great for three basic reasons: 1. Because it came from a novel | which, I think, is one of the best of our times. The author, Richard Llewellyn, told his story of the Welsh miners with the kind of eloquent sympathy that makes for memorable writing. 2. The cast was chosen not for names, but for adaptability and talent. Walter Pidgeon, ‘Donald

Custer's Life Is Depicted
The 'General' Is Protrayed By Errol Flynn
“They Died With Their Boots On,” the Indiana’s current movie attraction, is a protracted and detailed account of the life and exploits of George Armstrong Custer. As Custer, whom history records as a “General” but the Army as a lieutenant, Errol Flynn squints his eyes and orders his regiment to “charge,” but fails to create a vivid picture of a hell-roaring fighting soldier. As his wife, Olivia de Havilland is in many ways excellent, though her role called only for passive devotion—the kind of wife a soldier would fight for. The story begins with Custer at West Point. The authentic records show that no other cadet before or since made worse or got more demerits. But Custer was not a gentleman’s soldier. Soon we have him distinguishing himself in the Civil War, followed by a period of restlessness born of inactivity and finally a return to active service. For popularizing one of Amerjca’s early heroic fighting men, there are some honors due.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 1 (U.P)— Directors rarely worry about Patsy Kelly not being ready with her lines. If she forgets those in the script, she can fill in with some of her own invention, usually just as good and sometimes better than the, originals. Her artistry as an ad libber comes from three and one-half years trouping with Frank Fay. She had a 37-minute routine with him and never knew just what he was going to say. | Crisp, Sara Allgood and John Loder probably will never equal Mickey Rooney at the box office, but the quality is there just the same. 3. The direction and production is artistically sincere with no attempt to capitalize on cheapness or distort Mr. Llewellyn’s original intentions. Mr. Ford has chosen to tell much of the story through the words of a narrator, much as the book was written: The backward look of the young man as he packed his bundle and prepared to leave the Welsh valley whete slag piles covered the green things and drove out the people.

the answers. Working With RKO
Miss Kelly, who was christened Veronica, is working at RKO in “Sing Your Worries Away.” The picture possibly marks a climax in her comeback from a situation which for a time seemed to have ended her career as a comedienne. This was the death of actress Thelma Todd. They were close friends, and for a long time after she died Miss Kelly found it impossible to be funny. She spent much time alone, quit caring about her figure, and became 47 pounds overweight. Now Her Old Self When she began. to ‘come out of her slump, she went to a sanitarium and dropped the excess poundage in four months. But she also became ill, and it was another 18 months before she could go back to work. Once started again, she worked in “Road Show,” “Topper Returns,” “Broadway Limited,” and the new “Playmates,” in quick succession. She is definitely her old self again. And with so much of her former mental pickup that around the sound stages they call her “Ad Lib” Kelly.
JUNGLE QUEEN DOTTIE
So much of a jungle queen is Dorothy Lamour in “Malaya,” that she does repeated scenes with a tiger, a lion, an elephant and a chimpanzee.
The cast generally performs its assignments competently; Arthur Kennedy as the low-handed trading company manager; Charley Grapewin as the derelict, California Joe; Sydney Greenstreet (who reaped some honors in “The Maltese Falcon” as Lieut.
