Oregon State Under-Rated, Coach Claims
By JACK GUENTHER URitedl Press Stalt Correspondent DURHAM, N. C, Dec. $1. —<When the Nttle men in the shredded wheat overcoats start pacing your ceiling tomorrow morning shouting that John L. Lewis has approved the open shop, the Duchess of Windsor has just out-pointed Billy Conn and Christopher Columbus has been spotted sailing into New York Harbor, don't call for another fspitih ala ice bag. For, no matter how you have celebrated New Years Eve, your une invited guests may be speaking the truth. I know, for today I experienced something which has cured me of skepticism forever. I heard and saw a football coach complain that his team was under-rated, that it should be favored and that
it would win the Rose Bowl game
with something to spare. Ordinarily I'd be inclined to attribute such statements to sheer delirium or call in any psychiatrist who would give me a commission for my tip. But I've felt Lon Stiner's pulse, checked his blood pressure and watched him pass the standard chalk line test. The big fellow with the receding hairline wasn suffering from a thing. He meat all he said. ‘ “It is perfectly ridiculous that Oregon State, a team which won the championship of the Pacific Coast Conference, should be quoted as a 8<1 under-dog to Duke or to any club you can name” Stiner exe pounded, slowly gathering steam. “Why, the way I see it, my Beavers should be favored, After all, they are going to win” Tough Game Each Week
Specifically, the husky young man Who led Oregon State to its first coast title since the citizens around Corvallis greeted each other by saying “54-40, or Fight” meant that his Beavers will defeat a team characterized by such seasoned Durham sports experts as Hugo Germino and E. V. Mitchell as the finest the magnificent local campus has produced. “Of course Duke is an outstanding football eleven,” Stiner agreed. “It must be, Wallace Wade has quite a record in Bowl games and he is right at the top of the nation in winning games of every sort. But we aren't exactly cream-puffs up at ‘State, either, and we whipped some pretty rugged football outfits ourselves, “Why, we had a tough game every week. For instance, we played Southern California in our opener and lost only in the last 10 seconds. Then we defeated Washington the next week.and Stanford the next. Every Saturday there was a tough game and, although they were close, win them we did. ‘There were two upsets for every expected victory on the coast this year~and we grabbed our share.” “We've had a tough row to hoe j getting here, and the long trip ' hasn't done us much good, but I'm ) Saying we will win, and that by no means should we be so under-rated. Just remember that they call us Beavers, and Beavers, hy and large, are pretty busy little critters” Now do you believe two and two make five? I do.
Bulldogs. The Oregon State team has been completely out-towered.
Butler Opponent
Towering John Mandie, Oregon State's 6 foot 4 inch basketeer, paces the Beavers tomorrow night as they meet Buller at the Field House. It will be the fifth game of a six-tilt vacation schedule for the

will be the fourth game in the last five in which the Butler squad
