Duplication in Christmas Charity Cases Avoided By Its Operation.

The Christmas Clearing House, Phich prevents duplication of Aid to needy and under-

vileged, reported 8750 cases during 1941. In its work this year the clearing Bouse prevented 941 duplications of tmas aid. Its annual report ows that 5525 children received and 1708 were supplied with as dinner and staple foods. thing wag distributed to 996 and 279 received money. During the pre-Christmas period, a. agrncies, organizations and in‘viZaals used the service of the Jearing house. Among these were churches, 20 clubs and fraternal ganizations and 25 social agencies. The work of clearing the donawas done by volunteer workers gave a total of 297 hours of time to the clearing house. Hiram E. Stonecipher was in charge of operations,

The Clearing House was taken yer this year by the Community d and was operated as a departent of the Council of Social Agenes. Besides the individuals registered frith the Clearing House, 165 reests from needy families were reived by telephone or letter. Desperate Nazis Try to Halt Reds

MOSCOW, Dec. 29 (U. P)— A strong Russian tank unit has dislodged German defenders from 80 towns and villages in two days’ fighting on the Moscow defense arc, a Soviet communique said today, while front dispatches reported that Nazi commanders were throwing hastily-assembled units in 8 desperate attempt to stem the Red Army's advance. Between Dec. 17 and 27, Russian troops on the Kalinin front northwest of Moscow drove the Germans from 332 populated places. Huge stores of supplies were captured. The troops found an entire German division composed of youths 17 and 18 years old. (Radio London said there was evidence of a general German withdrawal from the Mozhaisk and Maloyaroslavets sectors on the Moscow front. Nazi troops, it said, were in “dangerous position.” Russian reports told of continued advance in other sectors of the 1000-mile front.

P.).—Australian may be used as a Pacific operational base for United States, British Empire and Netherland forces, it was learned today as the war cabinet prepared for a conference Wednesday to consider a “most important” communication from Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Churchill's message, sent from Washington, will have a “vital bearing” on the future conduct of the Pacific war, it was said.
