HOPES HIGH FOR COLORADO 6.0.P.

Democrats On the Rune Carr Forces Aim at 2 Senate Posts.

By ROSCOE FLEMING Times Special Writer

DENVER, Dec. 25. —Appointment of Eugene D. Millikin as Colorado’s new U. 8. Senator, succeeding the late Alva B. Adams, is regardede here as the opening gambit in a campaign by which th Republican Party hopes to land both Colorado seats in the Senate in 1942 Governor Ralph IL. Carr, who named Mr. Millikin, is a natural for one Republican Senatorial nomination of 42. Mr. Millikin or some less static statesman—he is a solid man without a glowing personality—will be the other candidate. Mr. Millikin’s chairmanship of the Colorado Civilian Defense Council has introduced him to many Coloradans, and he has time to become better known before the 42 assemblies and primary. Mr. Millikin was the law and business partner of the late U. S. Senator Karl C. Schuyler until the latter's death in 1933, and in 1935 Mr. Millikin married Senator Schuvler’s widow. He is 50. He was born in Hamilton, O, is a graduate of the University of Colorado, enlisted in the Army as a private during the first World War and was a lieutéenant*olonel of engineers when mustered ut.

Called a Progressive

Governor Carr described him as a “progressive” and as a “Républican of today.” What that means is that the Governor did not compromise, in this appointment, with the extremely conservative or Phipps wing of the party, which until last summer contributed much of the party's Colorado funds, and held the state chairmanship and national committeemanship. Governor Carr could have pleased the Phippses very easily. The multimillionaire former U. S. Senator, Lawrence C. Phipps, has a son, I. C. Jr, whom he has long desired to see seated in the Senate, even temporarily. When Mr. Carr was nominated in 1938, he was an outsider so far as the Phippses were concerned, and though he is no radical ball-of-fire he has remained independent

PERU AND ECUADOR

SETTLEMENT SEEN

WASHINGTON, Deé. 25 (U. PO. —~Bragilian Ambassador Carlos Martins said today that the century-old boundary dispute between Peru and Beuador might be settled before the conference of American foreign ministers convenes at Rio de Janeiro on Jan..15. Settlement of the quarrel would remove an element of potential trouble from the forthcoming eonference, which is intended to foster solidarity in the face of e foreign aggression. shid that the United States, Argentina and Brazil, which had been extending friendly offices in the dispute, had worked out a formula which may be acceptable to both republics.

Brighter Side of War Hearlens U: S.

By EDGAR ANSEL MOWRER a WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 —Against serifus and unquestioned Japanese successes in the Pacific Ocean and the Far East, citizens of the democracies can celebrate Christmas this year with the feeling that our side is not doing so badly. For, on the credit side of the ledger, we éan chalk up: Almost a clean sweep of submarines from the North Atlantic sea lanes, which means the unhampered delivery of goods to Great Britain. A much safer position in the South Atlantic, which means that supplies en route to Aden and Australia, as well as to West African places, have an overwhelming chance of arriving. The greatest defensive battle of

all times just successfully completed by the Russians with the temporary dislocation of Hitler's armies. Finally, half of North Afriéa swept clean of Nazis by the British forces, and promises of vastly increased war production within the United States. Add fo these benefits the fact that Japanese aggression brought the United States into the war before it was toc late to win it and it becomes clear that on points the democracies are doing pretty well and that the American people can sincerely give thanks. Decidedly this does not mean that we cannot lose the war by the same sort of complacency that cost us the disaster at Pearl Harbor. But it certainly means that if the Americans cut out wrangling, strikes, and futilities of various kinds, sacrifice

a portion of their comfort and devote 60 per cent of their energies and income to winning the war, the chances for the aggressors are’ distinctly on the slim side. While the Navy received a black eye in Oahu, while it will be weeks and months before offensive naval warfare against Japan itself can be attempted, in the Atlantic, the American cruisers and destroyers, by all-out operation of the convoy system they adopted a couple of months ago, have almost prevented ship losses completely. In recent weeks almost no ships have been sunk between here and'the British Isles. 3 The reason became clear when the Navy announced that not less than 14 German submarines had been sunk or damaged in the North At lantic.

ACCESS TO MEXICO

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 25 (U. P.).— United States land, sea and air forces today were free to use Mex= ico soil for military purposes after action by the Mexican Senate which literally dissolved the international border as far as American troop movements are concerned. The Senate in secret session approved the legislation which had been urged by President Manual . Avila Camacho, who said he considered the move “indispensable” in view of th® “grave and evident danger” to Mexico which would result from the slightest weakness in continental defense. Although there was no confirmation, it was reported here that “a number of American troops” were stationed at strategic places along the border

He led the Republicans -out of the doldrums of constant defeat in Colorado, and it soon became evident he would continue to be its leader, and probably its Senatorial candidate in 1942. It was then the Phippses stepped out. Democrats continue disorganized. With the death of Senator Adams, Edwin Carl Johnson became the senior Senator and the party’s natural leader in Colorado. But “the big Swede” had aroused statewide bitterness because of his support of Senator Wheeler and his denuneiations of President Roosevelt in the spring of 1940, and his sit-down strike during the national campaign of 1940. Only over the dead political bodies of Colorado’s Roosevelt wing of the party will Senator Johnson become its leader, or, indeed, be renominated. They blame him because Delprae went Republican by 11,000 n .

You get back your Kodacolor films and also the color prints you have ordered. The film will not do for projection. You need Kodachrome for that because the colors do not appear as in real life, but show the complementary colors. Red lips appear bluegreen, blue skies appear yellow. But this odd-looking color negative brings out the correct colors in the paper prints. The cost? It runs from $1.25 to $240 a roll, including processing. That does not include prints, which will be 40 cents each. They are made of a standard width, 2%

Use Comon Sense

The question every fan is asking these days is: “Will the war bring restrictions on our hobby and will we be forced to shobt pictures only in our own homes?” The answer seéiis to be no—at least not immediately. Army and Navy authorities Say they have no

power to issue such regulations.

A lot of minicams will dangle from Christmas trees this year. How we hope they fall into the (right hands. Let's hope they reach the amateur who started out with big ideas and got a 4x5, which is rather heavy for toting around on casual trips, and for which the film is something of an item in the budget. Let’s hope they go only te neat and careful people. Not cranks, but people who can operate a viscose without including a fingernail ripping down the emulsion; people who can keep dust out of {an enlarger and out of a camera; people who are willing to take as much pains with lighting and &rranging material for a small camera as for a large one. Good for Color, Toe Le’s hope they go to travelers, to hikers, to young fellows with an interest in science, to young parents who want slews of pictures of the baby, to fans waking up to the fun of color photography. We hope the people who get “cams” for Christmas can handle them like the Marines can the Japs or they have a chum who advises them to stick to closeups and very simple material until they have some practice. We hope someone advises them to send the first few rolls to a really good photo lab for processing, and so make sure that any were not due to darkroom slips. Dear Santa--that's what we hope for Christmas. = » -
