Instead of making the usual bows when the curtain

Man Who Came to Dinner” will be same zippy comedy on the screen that it was on the stage. Monty Woolley is despicable and bombastie, no less. Also shown to the trade was Universal's “Paris Calling.” first of the movies to come that will dramatize what is going on now in France. Naturally, the theme is sabotage. The stars are Elizabeth Bergner and Randolph Scott. Probably not a few movietown big-wigs are burning because that young upstart, Orson Welles, has produced the film (“Citizen Kane”) which the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures has chosen as the “best Hollywoodmade picture of 194%” Tabbed as “exceptional,” in addition to Mr. Welles’ opus, were “How Green Was My Valley” (opening at the Circle on New Year's), “The Little Foxes,” “The Stars Look Down” (no takers among local exhibitors), “Dumbo,” “High Sierra” “Here Comes Mr. Jordan,” “Tom, Dick and Harry,” “The Road to Zanzibar’ and “The Lady Eve.

PAUL GALLICO, the reformed sports writer, has turned in the completed script for the movie to be based on the life of Lou Gehrig. Sam Wood was named to direct when Howard Hawks announced he wanted a long honeymoon. . . . Red Skelton, you know, is the guy who makes fun of women drivers. Well, the other day Mr. and Mrs. Skelton applied for California driver's licenses and took the prescribed operating tests. Mrs. Skelton passed with a perfect mark. Red flunked miserably. Or so they say. Surprising no one, Tin Pan Alley has come up fast with a variety of song titles based on the war, to wit: “We'll Always Remember Pearl Harbor,” “Let's Put the Axe to the Axis,” “The Sun Will Soon Be Setting for the Land of the Rising Sun” “We're Going to Find a Fellow Who Is Yellow and Beat Him Red, White snd Blue.” “We've Got To Do a Job on the Japs, Baby,” “They're Gonna Be Playing Taps on the Japs,” “You're a Sap, Mr. Jap” “Put the Heat on Hitler, Muss Up Mussolini and Tie a Can Japan,” “We'll Knock the Japs Right Into the Laps of the Nazis” “The Japs Havent Got a Ghost of a Chance,” “To Be Specific— It's Our Pacific’—and the list goes on and on And speaking of music, Capt. Best Co-Ed Singer in Nation Born Near Indiana Line
THE HUNT FOR the outstanding singer among college girls in America has proved that the best warblers come not far from the banks of the Wabash. Phyllis Wil cox of Indianapolis, who represented Indiana University in the Hour of Charm finals over the radio, had the satis. Miss Wilcox faction of losing to an Ohio girl who was born near the Indiana border. The winner, Dorothy McVitty of Ohio State. is a native of Lima, O. Her victory gives to Ohio State University a $4000 scholarship which is to be | awarded in her name to deserving music students.

That sum also goes to Marilyn Skiles of the University of Illinois, another finalist. As a loyal Hoosier, Miss Wilcox can take comfort in the fact that Illinois borders Indiana. The search for the outstanding co-ed singer was made by Phil Spitalny’s All-Girl Orchestra.
Chaney Jr. Creates Role
He's Transformed Into a Strange Werewolf
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 28 (U. P) — Lon Chaney Jr, who for a long time was cast in conventional roles,
finally is creating a character to equal any played by his late father, the “man of a thousand faces.” Chaney has the title role in Universal's “The Wolf Man,” and is transformed by makeup artistry
ters ever seen on the screen. In a picture its makers hope will give audiences the shudders, Chaney will appear as a werewoli— half man, half wolf.
Looks for Werewolf
Task of turning Chaney from a respectable citizen into a werewolf fell to Jack Pierce, creator of the Frankenstein monster, “The Mummy” and others. Pierce had considerable difficulty finding out just what a werewolf looked like. “I combed numerous histories of England without finding a practical description of a werewolf,” he said. “About all I learned was that the legend began, and still persists, among the people of Wales who live around the ancient castles. “Sometimes the wind produces sounds like the howling of wolves. Apparently the werewolf legend started with these noises.”
Makeup Takes 4 Hours
Unable to find a workable description of a werewolf, Pierce designed one of his own. He started with a plaster bust of Chaney, practicing in the application of yak and kelp hair before starting on the

A strange nose piece aids t “wolf” illusion, and even ears, hands and feet have to be hairy. The werewolf wears shirt and trousers, so Chaney is spared having the rest of his body made up.

Ginger at Par
YOU'LL BE comforted to learn, I'm sure, that Ginger Rogers is now uipping the scales at 115 pounds, which is precisely what she weighed when she made her first Hollywood picture, “42nd Street,” in 1933. They say it's taken Ginger six years to regain the weight she lost when she was kicking the hooves with Fred As- | taire . When the studio pub- | licist made the rounds finding | out what the stars planned to do Christmas, he found John Barry- | more unpredictable as usual. | “I may,” said the walking scotch | and soda, “go swimming, skiing, hunting or combine the three.”

Take Pride In Back Lot
Warner Bros.' ‘Juke Girl
Set Is Fascinating.
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 28 (U. P) — The back lot at Warner Bros. usually is as busy as any of its sound stages. It's a fascinating place—you never know what's pita to turn up next. Pride of the back lot at the moment is the “Juke Girl” &8t, a rowdy, sprawling little section of a town so brilliantly neonslighted airline pilots coming in to nearby airports can use it for a landmark. It is a two-street town, with one street running north and south and the other east and west. There wi four blocks of bars, gambling and dance halls. They will be shooting there at night for two
weeks. Ann Sheridan, Ronald Reagan, Richard Whorf, Alan Hale, and Gene Lockhart are among tie characters who whoop it up along these streets in a rauceous melodrama which includes a lynch mob attack on the two-story jail. Name of the town is Cat Tail Director Curtis Bernhardt said it was patterned after a village in Florida. It's an expensive set,
