LONDON, Dec. 23 (U. P.).—The 26,00C-ton German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were damaged during a Royal Air Force raid on Brest Thursday, the Air Ministry said last night after examining photographs taken during the daylight attack. “Now it is quite certain that heavy, armor-piercing bombs fell between the starboard side of the Gneisenau and the side of the drydock, a distance of only 20 or 30 feet, and thus the effect of an explosion in a confined area was appreciable,” the Ministry said. Another bomb fell between the part side of the Scharnhorst and the side of the dock. “There is reason to believe that it was a certainty that a heavy bomb fell amidships and penetrated the Scharnhorst deck,” the Air Ministry said. “It is reasonable to suppose that the mechanism of the dock gates was damaged and that the ships cannot be removed until it is
