TIPPETT

WELL, HERE WE ARE with just one more day of the 1941 bird season and if you didn't get your bag limit this time you'd better look to your skill with the shotgun

for it was a pretty good year,

all in all.

In fact, the State Conservation Department goes so

far as to label this year “a

bnormally good,” with more

quail in the northern part of the state than have been

recorded in many years.

The main thing to remember now is to hold your fire when you flush a covey, a Hungarian partridge or a pheas-

ant. If they’ ve managed to |

escape you so far they've got a right to enjoy another vear of protection. |

= " se i Hit Him Again THE NEXT PERSON who tells us there's no use in going out after rabbits any more this year because they are all gone is going | to get a punch in the nose. That is if hes a little guy. In the first place Indiana rabbits are still as thick as fleas on a coon dog in summer and the hunting season so far hasn't even made & dent in the rabbit population. Just to prove it—C. (Clinton) R. Gutermuth, director of the Conservation Department, drove from Hammond the other day through Illinois and Towa to Des | Moines, a trip of some 450 miles, In that distance he counted three | rabbits killed by ears. Returning home he counted 17 killed by traffic between Montesuma and Indianapolis. Some people are getting to the stage where they think more rabbits are killed by traffic in the Hoosier State than are rabbits killed by any means in other States, Just think—Indiana. the Rabbit State,

gE = = Applause for Clubs THE 1058 CONSERVATION clubs in Indiana this week will receive a letter from the state thanking them for the good work they have done in the past year and expressing the belief that the clubs will continue their work during the present emergency. It just happens that many of these clubs are taking what surplus money they have in their pockets and investing it in Defense Bonds and Stamps. A good idea that other clubs could adopt and typical of these sporting groups who through the years have had but one main thought in mind— the conservation of America’s na- | tural resources =

THE NEW YORK OFFICE of “Outdoor Life” brings to our attention an article to be run in | their next issue which deals with | the greatest natural living ene- | mies of game and fish in the United States, The article was written by Buck Rutledge, Maryland game warden, who has spent the past 20 vears and more tramping through woods and talking to hunters all over his state. Here is the list of what he considers the worst predators: Brook, brown and rainbow trout—the common water snake. Largemouth and smallmouth | black bass—the carp (by eating spawn), White-tail deer—in the East, dogs running at large; in the ! West, the cougar. Wild turkey—the fox. ane grouse—the great horned owl. Rabbit—th: common cat. Quail-—the common cat. Squirrel—the goshawk. Ringneck pheasant—the skunk, by eating eggs and young. Wild duck—the crow, by eating eggs and young. |

New Show Rule

The American Kennel Club has | now amended its rules so that member-clubs and licensed allbreed shows may decide the best | local dog in show. This award ! will be reached by the same logical process that now leads up to the familiar “best in show" honor. The judge will choose the best inn local class of each breed and these specimens then will compete | in their respective local group: clastes. The winners of the local groups will meet for “best local dog in show.” My The new award is particularly adaptable to the two-day show k with a moderate entry that wishes

HERE'S HOW TO ACT IN AIR RAID

London U. P. Bureau Men Give Helpful Mints to Their Countrymen.

Ameria 1s I AEd, Je qth zent may find it helpful to know what British civilians have learned about aerial bombardment in the event that New York, or nicpee, or Los Angeles has to “take i did London. Here—as compiled by corresponds ents of the United Press Bureau— are some of the guiding rules and] pA principles demon that it's good to be careful but that the aetual danger—if you co-operate with authorities—is much less than one would imagine. 1—You can expect to be fright ened. However, you can get consolation from the fact that Jouve got lots of company, for few people who do not feel a sink. ing sensation in the stomach when the drone of bombers comes from the night sky. But you'll also find yourself trying not to act scared— which is just about the best thing you can do for the morale of the people around you.

Chances of Getting Hit 2—Americans here hve figured

Ore, or Birmingham, Ala, both of which have about 300,000 popula{tion, your chances of getting hit

which drops kills at least one person. ‘And that doesn't always hap(pen, If you live in a target aréa— near steel mills for example—your chances of getting hit are more pronounced. 3—United Press men _— London have developed two toward bombings. Bt Taves, now in South Africa, adopted a “what the hell theory,” asserting that if a bomb has your name on it, there's nothing you can do about it. The other is the “no use asking for it” theory whereby you take

buildings and stay away from glass as much as possible when raids are on, Flying fragments of glass are probably the most dangerous results of bombing. Blasts from the biggest bombs rarely are felt more Ss away.

High or Low?

&— After two years of war here, there still aré two schools of thought as to the safest place during a raid. One school contends that the only safe place is close to the top | 2 of a ou won't ‘be buried

says the basement is safer. Few Bomb travel more than four or five stories before exploding and people lin A basement usually are safe. A good would be the middie floors of a good, strong building, whilg if you live in a residential district your basement is fairly good protection. Britain's un-

raid shelter saved thousands of lives! but the trend now is for each to have a strongly reinforced room. One shel®®r—a good one— consists of a heavy wooden table with wire netting around the sides. Above all ool.”

Bohemia: Moravia Ruler Wants Right Books Read On German History.

Constiehy 3 Ww eh Jndiank poly Th Times BERN, Dec. 19.—The ('zechs tor years have beer reading the wrong history books, State Secretary Karl Frank, assistant to Reichcommissioner Reinhard Heydrich of Bo-hemia-Moravia, told the League for the Study of German History, in! the Sudetenland, according to an account received here. Dr. Frank added the blunt warning that this state of affairs would not be allowed to happen in the future Dr. Frank attacked particularly the historian, Franz Palacky (1798 1876), whom he accused of the foundations for the anti man polieies of Jan Masaryk and Dr. Eduard Benes (leaders of the pro-Allied Czech governmentsine ‘exile). He admitted that some of | Palacky’s disciples—“evil spirits”— were still operating in former Czechoslovakia and attrtibuted the recent poison murder of a proGerman journalist to these circles, says the account in Der Neue Tag of Praha. Dr. Frank said that despite the teachings of Palacky and others of his school, the Czech future could lie only within the closets co ration with the Reich. He d that its basis must be this sentence: and Moravia cannot live without membership in the Reich; a Reich wi t Bohemia and via is unthinkable *
