now, Columbia sports captains, notified their respective coaches that they have been accepted for service in the Army Air Corps and probably will be called .for active duty before they can lead squads through coming cambaigns. Both are ready to drop sports and atademie .activities at a moment's notice. They recall the experience of Leonard Will, the Lion's varsity fullback, who was called by the Army Air Corps from football prac« tice in mia-September. So certain is Grunow that he will be called before the crew season that, at his suggestion, varsity crew men elected his successor. The selection was Arthur BE. Smith of Richmond Hill, N. Y.

Many consider the local champions musical efforts evidence that he has proven himself not merely an artist, but also a prophet —one with hardly a peer. More than a few seasoned eritics, musical and otherwise, believe that Jenkins himself has been really through for some time and that when the 15-round bout in Madison Square Garden is over he will hardly be in any condition to sing. The betting summarizes this sentimfent. The odds are 8-5 that An-

The figures appear sound. If Jenkins i$ to win, and after the sorry spectacle he has made of himself against his recent opponents a ‘triumph would must win quie his vaunted punch.

Want to Skate in Figure 8s? World Champ Begins Series
By MEGAN TAYLOR World's Champion Figure Skater BOSTQN, Dec. 19—So you want to be a figure skating champion? Well, it is a hard job. It took me 12 years to win a world champion« ship, and there were times when I wanted to give up and forget the whole thing. My father, Phil Taylor, taught skating at fashionable St. Moritz in Switzerland. He put me on skates for the first time at the age of five. The following year, I started practicing the eights. I wanted to enter competition for the bronze medal, the first recognition in skating. But I didn't take the test until I was seven. That was a memorable occasion my first appearance before the public. I had a nice routine prepared and despite the presence of a lot of famous skaters, the big stadium at St. Moritz didn't frighten me at all. I did every trick and spin I knew. When I finished, the music was still playing so I kept on skating. I won a silver cup and they gave me a bouquet. After passing my bronze test, I saw Sonja Henie for the first time. She was magnificent and inspired me. Little did I realize that one day we would be rivals for the world championship. A sore throat kept me out of the British championships when I was 10 years old, but after recovering I returned to Switzerland and really worked for the next championship. I took ballet lessons and gym, for the winner was to represent Great Britain in the 1032 Olympic Games at Lake Placid. I prevailed, and at 11 was champion of Great Britain. We sailed for America immediately afterward and arrived 10 days before the games. The thought of competing against the great Sonja Henie made practice easier.
Sonja won. I placed sixth. We thought that not too bad for a little girl of 11. In the world championships in Montreal, I placed sixth again. My father and I worked very hard for the next year's championships, improving various steps, jumps and spins. In the 1935 championships, I placed fourth out of 22 entries from all countries. The following year I worked
were in Oslo, Sonja’s home town,
hand, including the King and Queen of Norway. I ran Sonja a very close. second.
kept me from participating the following year. My weight increased. I grew tall and out of shape. When I returned to Switzerland, my father nearly swooned. I ran two miles every morning, skipped and danced until I was back in condition, A technjpality kept me out of the 1936 Olympics, but I won third place in the European and second in the world championships. Finally, in 1038, I won the world title in Stodkhom. When I returned to England, the Lord Mayor received me. The King and Queen congratulated me. I successfully defended my title in 1939 in Prague, and looked forward to the 1040 Olympics in Finland. As you know, the war cancelled all international competitions, so I turned professional and am now touring the "United States with “Ice-Capades of 1942.” I have prepared a series of articles, “Learn to Skate,” for The Indianapolis Times. I hope it will help many youngsters to enjoy as much health and success and Lave as much fun skat-
ing as I have.
