A Devilish Deal

In “All That is

He no sooner says the words than old Mr, Serateh (Walter Huston) appears and makes him Just such a proposition, For seven years of prosperity, farmer Jabes sells his soul to the Devil Prosperity is his, all right, and in his desire for high living he neglects his faithful wife (Anne Shirley) for his baby's nursemaid (Simone Simon). This all foi on until the night that the vil=Mr, Seratch--gomes to cols fect his dues. Frantically, Jabez and his wife, who admires him still, appeal to Daniel Webster himself to argue the case. Daniel accepts and he demands a jury trial. And there before a jury of the Devil's choos ing, such American wrong-doers as Benedict Arnold and Simon Girly, the fiery tongue of the gifted Webster spits eloguent flame, The strongest man of the nation eomes to grips with the Devil himself. AS a short story, at least, it was a high intriguing piece of literary fantasy.

The Droll Thurber

ANOTHER OF our American writers (of an entirely different sort) comes to the screen in “Rise and Shine” a college football movie, which opens tomorrow at the Indiana. This one is based on the book, “My Life and Hard Times” by the superb humerist, James Thur ber, Mr. Thurber went to Ohio State University and the place never seems to have ceased giving him material for funny writings. Preducer of the movie is ane other man who has made a luge urious living with words, Mark Hellinger, Starring Jack Oakie as the greatest all-American halfback who ever lived, yes sir, “Rise and Shine” refuses to be properly respeetful when great feats of athletios are performed, Briefly, it's like this: Before the big game with Notre Dame, Halfback Oukey is kidnapped by gangsters. Of course, without Oakie, dear old Clayton College doesn’t have a chance with the Irish (which is nearer the truth than you might suspect). Too, the gangsters may harm the girl of the story, Linda Darnell. Naturally, this leaves George Murphy, Linda's admirer, with nothing to do but rescue Oakie and foil the whole plot. Woman Judge

“DESIGN FOR SCANDAL" based on Lionel Houser's play and Staring Wmarrgt at Loew's, presents “the peculiar problem of how to woo a woman who by profession is a judge, The usual tactics don't apply. Walter Pidgeon is a news photographer who offers to help his publisher (Edward Arnold) square matters when Judge Rosa lind grants Arnold's wife a divorce and monthly alimony of $4000. The cameraman’s idea is to make the judge fall in love with him, then have her sued by his supposed “finances” and thus make her abandon the bench admist the resulting scandal. The plan goes all right until the love becomes more than a pre« tense. It's the sort of thing one doesn’t often see Mr, Pidgeon do. But the report is that he knows his way around in the light as well as the heavy stuff.
