British Spokesmen Admit
Danger to Singapore Is Increasing.
SINGAPORE, Dec. 18 (U. P)— Official reports today said that Jap. anese troops based on the Thailand sector of the Isthmus of Kra are a powerful two-way offensive, northward into the Burma jungles and south-—against heavy » British resistance—into the Malay States approaches to Singapore. (A British military spokeaman in London spoke frankly of the indanger to Singapore. He admitted that British forces are outnumbered by the Japanese. He said British defense plans had
os! superiority in Malayan waters and by Japanese occupation of Thailand).
Map shows (1) Jap attacks on Burma and Kedah: (2) on east coast of Malaya, and (3) thrusts resulting in reported landing today in British Borneo.
To the north the hard-fighting imperial garrison at Hongkong was strongly entrenched on the Inner defense lines of the island metropolis. In Burma, reports said, fighting of increasing severity is developing as the Japanese attacked. British forces both in south Bums and northem Malaya were fighting in deep jungle country. and it was admitted that some units are not in contact with their main bases,

Times has advanced that money and we're spending against it right now. On Christmas Eve we'll scoop up the dimes, wash them and count them. but in the meantime, those dimes are cloth ing children. Q-Isn’t the need less this year than last? After all, the war and defense boom is on. There ought to be less need. Isn't that true? A-That’'s what we thought at first, too. But it isn't. Many small factories have had to close because of the priorities restrie« tions and a good many of those men are out of work. Too, there are a great many children whose fakiucts are dead : hog whose hers are strugg to keep homes together with very little money. Actually, we have more names on our lists than last year, We wouldn't have believed it, either, but we've discovered it to be true. » ® ”

Are vou going to do better than that this year? A-—-We don't know. Naturally, we'd like to, but we've never gone after figures, never will. All we're interested in is making every dol lar go as far as it can, to clothe as many children as we can. The need is there, we're just trying to do the job with your help. All you have to do is to send your money to us at Clothe-A-Child, or call us up and we'll tell you the rest. Don’t forget that num« ber. As a matter of fact, do it right now

‘War Moves Today
By LOUIS F. KEEMLE United Press War Analvet
The continued success of Soviet arms against the German invaders changes the question of whether Germany could knock Russia out of the war this winter to whether she can knock Russia
out at all.
Hitler publicly has given up hope of striking farther into Russia, either in the Moscow-Leningrad region or the rich south, before next spring. The Russians have retrieved the Don industrial region, saved Moscow and Leningrad, and now are engaged in driving
the Germans out of the Crimea.
Their offensive shows no signs of slackening and it is impossible to
tell how far they might drive back the invader and how much lost territory they may regain. When and if the German armies renew their offensive next year, Russia may be in a better position to resist than she was this time. The rate of her material losses presumably has diminished now that ghe is on the offensive and the enemy in retreat,
Germany Needs Oil It ought to be possible to make important strides during the winter months in rehabilitating her industries which rapidly are being developed in the Volga-Ural region and Siberia to replace those knocked out by the Germans in western Russia. Material aid from Britain and the United States presumably will con tinue, despite the complication of the war with Japan. Moreover, Germany badly is in need of a new source of oil. Experts agree that her European supply is running now. If she attempts to get it from the Middle East or the Caucasus by striking through Turkey, it probably would entail ane other long and costly campaign which would further deplete her manpower and resources.
Reds Invaluable Aid
Hitler's miscaloulation of Russia's fighting power now is obvious. His attack on Russia was a mistake that may cost him dearly, If he had thrown against Britain or her pos« sessions what he threw against Russia, the present course of the war might have been different. Russia thus has been of invaluable aid to the Allies and should cone
tinue to be,

When the British and Russian strategists meet in Moscow shortly, the extent and nature of that aid will be mapped out, Tha question of Russia's position with relation to Japan undoubtedly will be discussed. Russia gave what appears to be a valid reason for not engaging in hostilities with Japan at present. She wants to nail down the Hitler menace first, at least for the winter, Then the Japanese menace to her eastern territory might be taken up. The serious Japanese threat to the Philippines and Singapore must be dealt with before the Allies can con= gider an attack on Japan proper, The vulnerable towns and cities of Japan are inaccessible from any present Allied base and the Navy and carriers cannot be spared from the southern seas. But when the time comes and Russia consents, an air fleet based on Viadivostok could strike Japan, and strike hard.
